September 3, 2009/in almanac, boats, calendar, family, history, Leelanau, preservation, travel, traverse city, youth

welcomeThe Maritime Heritage Alliance is hosting the inaugural Michigan Schooner Festival at the Traverse City Open Space and Duncan L. Clinch Marina on September 11, 12, & 13.  Highlights of the weekend include schooner tours, special sailing tours, Pirate re-enactors performance, a local artisan tent, and kids events. Entertainment starts at 12:00pm on Saturday at the Michigan Schooner Festival Entertainment Stage with Song of the Lakes, the Wild Sullys and Lee Murdock.

The fun doesn’t stop there, be sure to attend on of the Post Festival parties Friday and Saturday, or have breakfast with the pirates on Sunday.

A $5 general admission pass grants you a tour of the three Maritime Heritage Alliance ships that are docked. For children, $5 grants them admission on the ships and also five tickets for carnival games. Special tours and sailing are priced separately!

Also on Friday night in conjunction with the Michigan Schooner Festival, the Leelanau Peninsula Vintner’s Association has themed their monthly Second Fridays event, as Pirates of the Peninsula. On the second Friday of every month, many of the LPVA wineries have special evening hours from 5 – 8 PM.
