Leelanau Primary Election Results

Filed under: Leelanau, government — Andrew McFarlane @ 9:06 am

The Record-Eagle reports that District 2 county Commissioner Mark Walter outpolled challenger Michael Anton 251-202 in the only contested primary. The county-wide proposal to renew 0.5 mills for two years to fund road maintenance passed 3,035-1,586. The $29-per-household annual fee to fund recycling and waste reduction programs passed in all townships & municipalities save Bingham, Cleveland, Kasson and Solon Townships.

Read Election Recap in the Traverse City Record-Eagle for information about all the township ballot measures.

The Leelanau Enterprise has a detailed article on what the split vote on recycling might mean for the program. Sarah Lucas of the county’s Planning and Community Development department said "We were aiming for 100 percent participation from all townships. Legally, we could collect the fee in the seven townships that approved it, and cut services to the four townships that did not - but there’s simply no way to police our recycling sites and prevent people from dropping off their materials elsewhere even if the fee was voted down in their township."
