Ice Skating in Leelanau

December 27, 2010/in Leelanau, michigan, news, recreation, winter

Ice Skating in Suttons BayIt’s probably fitting that the morning after subjecting myself to the pain of broomball*, I come across this Leelanau Enterprise story on ice skating and ice rinks in Leelanau County that says:

Leland Township maintenance workers prepare an ice skating rink each year at Hancock Park off Union Street across from the Leland Country Club.

Up in Northport, Leelanau Township officials this week were still packing down snow and flooding a skate park at the Braman Hill recreation area in hopes that temperatures would stay low enough to freeze a smooth sheet of ice.

Meanwhile, in Suttons Bay, the ice was thick, smooth and hard at the corner of Lincoln and Broadway streets – the site of a Leelanau Farmer’s Market for part of the year, and the township’s “ice rink park” in winter months.

*Wikipedia says that broomball has special shoes and safety gear … somehow our version was missing that. Closer to this.
