Bob Purvis talks about sculpture
The third in a Glen Arbor Art Association series featuring local artists called Talk About Art will take place this Thursday (Mar 12) at 7:30 p.m.. Metal sculpture artist, Bob Purvis will talk about his art and how he creates it. In talking about himself as an artist, Mr. Purvis stated, “My work is about forms in space. I believe that steel can be manipulated to evoke emotion and that is what I strive to do.â€
A native of Traverse City, Bob Purvis graduated from Northwestern Michigan College and then went to work in his family’s steel fabrication business. When the business was sold in 1976 he struck out on his own. After a couple of years of repair work, he was asked to be more creative at the behest of clients interested in unconventional work. From that experience to present, he has tried to use his creativity to the fullest extent. His career has evolved to include architectural ironwork, furniture design and sculpture. It has also increasingly included interaction with art departments and their students in public schools throughout the Grand Traverse Region. Current sculptural work can be seen at the entrance to Center Point and the wall sconces inside the State Theater in Traverse City.
The GAAA is offering this series to help the audience gain an appreciation and better understanding of art and how it is created and it is open to the public at no charge.
