An evening with artist Russell Chatham

Filed under: Shopping, art, webdesign — Andrew McFarlane @ 11:07 am

Fall Evening by Russell ChathamThe Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will host an evening with the internationally acclaimed landscape artist Russell Chatham in association with the exhibition "Poetry of Landscape: The Seasons" paintings by Russell Chatham on Friday April 4, 2008 from 6-8 PM. Admission to the evening event is $25 for the public. Museum members will be admitted free with their membership card, but must have a ticket. Tickets can be purchased online by calling the Box Office at 231-995-1553.

The Chatham exhibition is a 36-year retrospective of the artist’s career featuring 28 paintings dating from 1969 – 2005. On exhibit since January 20, the collection presents a rare opportunity to see such an extensive variety of paintings by this renowned artist in one location.  Recognized by many as the finest American landscape painter living today, Chatham will speak at 6:30 PM followed by informal conversation in the museum's galleries with those in attendance regarding the wonderful collection of paintings being shown from the private collections of Randall and Mary Pittman and Forest Health Services.

You can learn more about Russell Chatham at his website. He is represented locally by Piper and Harry Goldson of Suttons Bay Galleries (who were instrumental in making this exhibition a reality).

  1. Many of you might recognize his work from the covers of the Rick Bass and Jim Harrison books. Several years ago we visited his studio in Livingston Montana. Incredible work. About 15 years ago a gallery in Glen Arbor had one of his works for sale for about $1800. I wish we could have obtained it, all we could afford was a print of a painting he did for R.L. Winston rods (fly fishing) which was originally proposed as the poster art for the movie "A River Runs Through It".

The print hangs in our living room along with a few other prints of his... still no originals... perhaps someday.

  2. An interview with Chatham will be aired Friday morning on both IPR News Radio (91.5 FM) and IPR Music Radio (88.7). The news station will probably air it twice – once between 6:30 a.m. and 7 a.m. and once between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. The music side could air it anytime (probably before 9).
