At the northern tip of Leelanau County, Northport was the gateway to Grand Traverse Bay and one of the earlies settlements in the county. Today, the village of Northport boasts a fine harbor and park, full service grocery and many other stores (including 6 antique shops and even more art galleries!). The hills around Northport are filled with cherry and apple orchards. Leelanau State Park at the northern tip of the Leelanau Peninsula is home to the historic and well restored Grand Traverse Lighthouse. Other parks include Peterson Park and the Leelanau Conservancy's Kehl Lake Preserve. Churches include Trinity Church of the United Church of Christ, the Bethany Lutheran Church, the Northport Evangelical Covenant Church, St. Gertrude's Church and St. Christopher's Episcopal Church. Omena is a small town in sheltered Omena Bay. It is home to a small grocery store, Lavendar Lane on the Bay, Leelanau Wine Cellars and the amazing Tamarack Craftsman art gallery. |
