The Leelanau News

News@leelanau.com has set this page up to help you keep an eye on Unsolicited Commercial E-mail aka Spam. A company like ours that relies upon the Internet for income cannot ignore the threat that spam poses to turn the Internet into some sort of giant junk mail zone. We welcome your feedback!
House of Spam - 8.18.98
Unsolicited commercial email (aka "spam") is one of the great banes of the Internet experience. After receiving 53 e-mails in a 12 hour period (about the "Pornography Garage"), I got mad and started looking. What I found was less than happy....

The Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial E-Mail has issued an alert about pending US House of Reprepresentatives legislation. The House Commerce Telecommunications Subcommittee (which Michigan Rep. John Dingell sits on) introduced language to HR 3888, The Anti-Slamming Amendment Act. HR 3888 was designed to halt the practice of switching consumers' long-distance carriers without permission.

The language requires that spam be identified in the body text of a message and places the burden on the recipient to inform the business that the spam is not welcome. Spammers should applaud at this point.

But wait, there's more. The bill also uses legal time travel to pre-empt all state laws regarding spam passed after July 1st of 1998.
Washington's Spam Law - 8.2.98
Mac-Guru Adam Engst and the three other editors of TidBITS Electronic Publishing have filed filed suit against WorldTouch Network for numerous violations of Washington State's new anti-spam law. WorldTouch sells the Bull's Eye Gold email address collection program that visits Web pages, follows links, records email addresses and then uses randomly generated return addresses. If you have an internet domain, chances are you've recieved hundreds or (like me) thousands of their spam messages.

The TidBITS crew hopes to stop WorldTouch, test the Washington law and send a message to spammers everywhere. Bravo. More about the suit & Washington's law.
