Leelanau Population Growth Outstrips Michigan [January 2, 2006]
The Leelanau Enterprise reports that just released Census Bureau figures have Michigan's estimated population at mid-decade (July 2005) at 10,120,860, up .2 percent from the previous year and 1.8 percent from the 2000 Census. Leelanau County is in the top 18% in terms of population growth between 2000 and 2004. The number of people calling Leelanau home at the turn of the century was 21,119. The estimate for 2004, according to the Census Bureau, is 22,163 Ñ up 5% to 1,044. Surprisingly, the fastest-growing age group in the county are "20-somethings" (those between 20-24). Also growing fast were residents over 50 while residents under 14 dropped. Read Census shows a 5% jump.

BATA Adds Southern Leelanau Route [January 3, 2006]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that on Monday the Bay Area Transportation Authority (BATA) launched its Empire village connector service, the second rural fixed route launched this year in Leelanau County. There will be four trips every weekday and stops include Glen Arbor, The Homestead, Glen Lake School, Maple City, Cedar and Tom's West Bay. The Northport village connector route started in June, with five daily buses making more than 18 stops along the M-22 corridor. Read Starting Monday, buses roll to Empire and visit BATA's web site.
