Volleyball & Basketball Previews [December 15, 2005]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle has previews for winter sports up. They report that last season Leland (returning three starters from last season's 66-8 squad) was the state volleyball runner-up in Class D while Suttons Bay (who lost a bunch of seniors) reached the Final Four in Class C. See Spikers go for another triple threat. Turning to hoops, the TCRE has the Cherryland (Class D) up and are of the opinion that the Cherryland Conference race should be wide open. Both Suttons Bay & Glen Lake have young teams this year as you can read in Stags favored in Northwest Conference.

Cut Your Own Christmas Tree [December 16, 2005]
The Leelanau Enterprise has a feature looking at how tree sales from Glen Noonan are helping the Cedar-Maple City Lions Club. You can cut your Christmas tree from groves of blue spruces and firs in Kasson Township and the price is just $10. The club offers three $1,000 scholarships to Glen Lake graduates, monthly awards to students of the month, help to those with special vision needs, and assistance to many other members of the community. Leelanau Farmer Moves Beyond Scotch Pines [December 19, 2005]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle has a feature on Jim Grant, a Leelanau County cherry and tree farmer who travels the world looking for perfect evergreen trees for northern Michigan. Gant works with almost 30 different tree varieties at his farm. The article gives an idea of what it's like to be in the Christmas tree business and looks at some of the exotic varieties Gant grows including Olympic fir and Equi-trojani from Turkey and Greece and Veitch and Nikko firs from Japan. Omena Holiday Serenade [December 20, 2005]
Next Wednesday (Dec 28) at 7 PM, the Omena Historical Society wil sponsor a "Holiday Serenade" concert at Omena Presbyterian Church. The concert will classical and folk music selections by Traverse and Leelanau area musicians. For more information, please call 386-7726 or visit the Omena HS web site.

Fishtown Sale Update [December 21, 2005]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that representatives of the nonprofit Fishtown Preservation Society met with the Carlson family this month to discuss the purchase of Leland's Fishtown. Bill Carlson said he wants to maintain Fishtown both for its historic significance and to provide continuity for the shop owners who've done business there for years.
