Leelanau Players Annual Meeting [November 3, 2005]
Anyone interested in community theater is invited to attend the Leelanau Players annual meeting on Tuesday, November 8, 2005 at Stone House Cafe in Leland. There are no commitments, just come and learn more about this theater group. Food and drinks will be provided during social time beginning at 7:00 with the business meeting beginning at 7:30. Boskydel Winery's Bernie Rink Honored [November 4, 2005]
Detroit News wine writer Sandra Silfven has a feature on Bernie Rink, 79, who put Leelanau CountyÕs first wine grapes in the ground at Boskydel in 1964. Bernie will be honored (and roasted) at a special tribute dinner next Thursday (Nov 10) at the Great Lakes Culinary Institute. A great article about one of Leelanau's classic characters! Suttons Bay Wins 1st Ever Regional Soccer Final! [November 7, 2005]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that one goal by Alex Dingrando (and an outstanding performance by goalie Matt Ness) allowed the Suttons Bay Norsemen to capture their first-ever regional soccer title by a 1-0 score. The Norse advance to Wednesday's Division 4 state semifinal at Muskegon West Michigan at 6 PM on Wednesday. Read One goal enough for Norse.
Leelanau PDR Program Hopeful [November 8, 2005]
This week's Leelanau Enterprise reports that members of the Leelanau County Farmland Preservation Board say they're hopeful that a new fundraising effort launched last week will allow them to leverage grant funding that may help preserve some 1,000 acres of farmland in the county. Remembering Empire's Air Force Base [November 9, 2005]
The Glen Abor Sun has a great feature on the United States Air Force's early warning radar system in Empire (752nd Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron aka the "golf balls"). The base was established in in November of 1950 and brought about 300 military personnel to the village, nearly doubling the population of the village. Read When the world came to Empire.
