The Cost of Contamination [10.25.02]
Today's story comes all the way from the Toledo Blade, which reports that the General Accounting Office has estimated that the cost of invasive species (zebra mussel, round goby, etc.) to the Great Lakes economy is well into the billions. With threats like the Asian carp looming, even the GAO is getting concerned. Read the story.
Coast Guard Surfboat [10.28.02]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle has a feature on the building of a 1900 Coast Guard surfboat for the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point by two Leelanau men (Dave Dean & Bruce Lehmann). The 25' boat follows the 102 year old specification down to the copper nails. Read the story.
Climate Change Workshop [10.29.02]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that a climate change workshop to discuss the impacts on the winter recreation, tourism and farming will be held on Nov. 8 from 8:30 - 3:30.
