Youth Program Grants Available [Oct 6]
The TC Record-Eagle reports that area nonprofits with youth-centered programs are invited to seek grants from the Youth Service Endowment of the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation (deadline Oct 21). The group will award $10,000 each in Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau counties. For more info, call 935-4006 or visit gtrcf.org. Read Funding available for youth programs.

Leelanau Student Count Declines Again [Oct 7]
The Leelanau Enterprise reports that student enrollment at county schools has declined in three county school districts: Suttons Bay (1,002 - 962), Glen Lake (down from 889 to 868), Northport (down 1 to 167) and also at St. Mary School (down 2 to 240). Leland gained 12-13 students (up to 447) and with 155 in grades 9-12, has the largest high school student count in its history. Read Enrollment decline continues.

Leelanau Trail Work Bee [Oct 10]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation Trails will host work bees on the Vasa Pathway and the Leelanau Trail from 9 AM - Noon this Saturday (Oct 15). Work on the Leelanau Trail will include trimming trees, cutting back overgrowth, marking root damage and ensuring there are clear vision areas at intersections. Glacier Bay Water Park Draws Concern [Oct 11]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that the proposed Glacier Bay Resort project (near M-72 and Carter Road in Elmwood Township) is drawing concern from some residents. In addition to a 200,000-square-foot outdoor water park and an 80,000-square-foot indoor water park, plans include more than 400 condominium/hotel units, two restaurants and various recreational amenities including a golf course, horse stables and recreation trails. The Elmwood planning commission will hold a public hearing on the Glacier Bay plans at 7 p.m. Oct. 18 at Norris Elementary. Read Residents concerned about water park.

Grape Crop Excellent, Apples Very Good [Oct 12]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that growers in Leelanau, Benzie & Grand Traverse and agricultural officials say that 2005 is shaping up to be a vintage year for grapes and apples despite rainfall that's 50% below average. Read It's been 'a good year for growing crops'.
