Fall for Art in Leelanau Gallery Tour [Sep 29]
Twenty-two of Leelanau's finest galleries will host the county's first annual art tour next Saturday and Sunday (Oct 8 & 9) from 10 AM - 5 PM. Participants can look forward to peak color in delightful surroundings, chatting with artists, enjoying refreshments and, upon completion of the tour, taking part in the drawings with prizes totaling nearly $5,000 on Sunday (6:30 PM) at Black Star Farms. Free brochures with maps will be available at any of the 22 featured galleries during the week prior to or the day of the tour -- look for the bright yellow FALL FOR ART IN LEELANAU signs!
Hail Damages Some Leelanau Apples [Sep 30]
The Leelanau Enterprise reports that a storm late last week brought hail that damaged some of Leelanau County's apple crop which is expected to reduce the value somewhat (though it is still a solid crop). Growers are harvesting Ida Reds, Romes, Honey Crisps, Galas, Spys and McIntosh varieties and have hopes that the damage will heal in late apples. Glen Arbor Women's Club Smorgasbord [Oct 3]
The Glen Arbor Women's Club Annual Smorgasbord Dinner will be held this Saturday (Oct 8) at the Glen Arbor Town Hall from 6-8 PM. Small Business Advisor Heads to Gulf Coast [Oct 4]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that Chris Wendel, former Leland shopowner and consultant for the Michigan Small Business and Technology Center, is part of a 25-member team who will spend the next two weeks in Biloxi, Miss., helping business owners file for disaster loans through the SBA. TCAPS, Leland Differ on K-16 Initiative [Oct 5]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that school leaders in Leland and Traverse City agree the system needs fixing but are taking different positions on a statewide petition to boost education funding. The K-16 Coalition Initiative would guarantee annual funding increases equal to inflation, cap districts' retirement contributions and seek to narrow the funding gap between districts statewide. While both boards agree there are problems with current funding, the TCAPS board opposed the measure while Leland's board asked Supt. Hartigan to circulate petitions.
