The Leelanau Enterprise reports that September's unseasonably warm and sunny weather (average high of 84.3 degrees compared to August's 72.5) has been a boon to area vintners who were facing a sub-standard crop before our amazing run of weather. Read the story.
Gambling Tolls & Proposal 1 [09.24.04]
The Leelanau Enterprise reports that there is a bill before state legislators that would authorize counties, cities or villages to erect toll booths or barriers on roads within one mile of Indian casinos and demand a $5 toll from any motorists traveling to the casinos. Tribal officials feel this is in response to a proposed amendment backed by Michigan tribes that would require voter approval of any new gambling operations in the state.

Student Count, Interesting Numbers [09.28.04]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle has an article about the fall student count that has an interesting statistic buried in it. Quoting Northport Superintendent Rick Cross, the article reports that in the last decade Leelanau County has lost half of its residents aged 25-40 while the number of people over 45 increased 200 percent.
