Alice Busby Memorial Walk [September 1, 2005]
The annual "Miles for Mammograms" walk (2 or 4 1/2 miles) starts this Saturday (Sep 3) at 9 AM in downtown Northport. The walk is in support of cancer screening for low income and uninsured men and women in Leelanau County and you can pick up a registration form (lower level of Leelanau Memorial Health Center) or call (231) 386-0075 for more information.
Trailers Being Filled for Katrina Victims [September 1, 2005]
Leelanau food & supplies left Friday and were used on Sunday in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. What we are donating here in Leelanau is literally keeping people alive and we are making a difference! Pic of volunteers sorting items in Spring Lake.
Drop off Sites: Leelanau Enterprise Newspaper (7200 E. Duck Lake Rd. Lake Leelanau), Leland Merchantile (Leland), Hansen's Market (Suttons Bay), Plant Masters (West Bayshore Dr., Suttons Bay), Olesons Market (on Garfield in Traverse City). Please bring non-perishable food stuffs, canned goods, ready to eat packages, water, batteries, blankets.
No Labor Day Picnic but Sugar Loaf Progress Reported [September 2, 2005]
The Leelanau Enterprise reports that Kate Wickstrom, owner of Sugar Loaf Resort, said she won't be holding a barbecue for the public in the parking lot of the resort this Labor Day weekend as hoped Ð but is nonetheless making progress toward reopening the resort. Manitou Islands Day Excursion [September 6, 2005]
This year's Annual Manitou Island excursion is this Saturday (Sep 10) and is a joint venture with the United States Life Saving Service Assocation. Travel with a unique group of historic architects, historians, and USLSS buffs who will share their wealth of knowledge during the trip. Area Forum on School Finance [September 7, 2005]
The Grand Traverse League of Women Voters will be hosting a School Finance Forum on
Wednesday, September 28 from 4:30-6:30 PM at the Grand Traverse District Library.
The program will focus on where we have been in regard to school financing, where we
are presently, and where we might go in the future. Presenters for the forum are
Tom White, Executive Director of the Michigan School Business Officials, and Paul
Soma, Director of Finance for the Traverse City Areas Public Schools. Grand Traverse League of Women Voters site.
