Potential Buyer of Sugar Loaf Creates Uncertainty [07.29.04]
Today's Leelanau Enterprise reports that an "unconventional" potential buyer of Sugar Loaf Resort may end up fouling the plans of two Florida land developers who are considering buying two adjacent golf courses with the hope that skiing will return. Kate Wickstrom, who operates a drug and alcohol rehab facility in Battle Creek based on methods outlined by science fiction author L. Ron Hubbard is the potential buyer and wouldn't disclose who the seller is. Read the story.
August 3rd Primary Preview [07.30.04]
The Leelanau Enterprise reports that next week's primary election could have the highest turnout in recent memory. In addition to several contested races, on the ballot will be the question as to whether the county seat should be moved from Leland to Section 19 in Suttons Bay Township. Read the story.
Veronica Valley as County Park? [08.02.04]
The Leelanau Enterprise reports that the Leelanau County Parks and Recreation Commission is considering a proposal to acquire the Veronica Valley Golf Course in Bingham Township for use as a county park. Read the story.
Steppin' In It & Silent Auction [08.03.04]
The popular band Steppin' In It will perform an outdoor benefit concert for the Glen Arbor Art Association this Sunday, August 8th at 7 PM at the Thoreson Farm located on Thoreson Road in the Sleeping Bear National Park. There will also be a silent auction with a wide variety of items for sale opening at 6 PM with artwork, restaurant gift certificates and more!
County Seat to Move, Primary Results [08.04.04]
The Leelanau County Seat will be moved on a 4527-3067 vote. In unofficial voting results, Joe Hubbell edged Sara Brubaker in the Prosecutor race and Mike Oltersdorf will face Del Moore in the fall election for Sheriff. In commissioner races, Jean Watkowski over Steve Van Zoeren (Dist 1), William Bunek (by 22 votes) over incumbent Richard Schmuckal (Dist 3) and David Shifflet (by 32 votes) over Tom Evans (Dist 5).
