Farm Bills [07.05.00]
Gov. Engler signed a package of bills June 28 that not only creates a farmland preservation program for Michigan, but also make it easier for farmland to remain in production after a sale and encourage agricultural processing facilities to locate in the state. Senate Bill 709 eliminates the agricultural property tax assessment "pop-up." Until now, when agricultural land was transferred by sale or inheritance, the assessment of the land was increased significantly to reflect higher market values. Senate Bill 1251, establishes the Agricultural Preservation Fund which allows local governments to apply for state grants to purchase agricultural easements.
