Cemetery Mystery [06.28.01]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that County officials are looking for an owner for Round Top Cemetery, a small cemetery in Kasson Township with about 30 graves (including some of Civil War veterans). The last recorded deed was in 1884 and the Commissioner Richard Schmuckal would like the county to take over and maintain the graveyard. Complete story in the Record-Eagle.
Swim Around Leelanau [06.29.01]
Liz Elling will swim 10 miles a day for 10 days around Leelanau County to raise money and awareness for the Leelanau Conservancy's efforts to conserve the land, water, and scenic character of Leelanau County. She begins her swim on Sunday, July 1st at the Benzie and Leelanau County border. More at the Conservancy's web site.
Drilling Permit Ban [06.29.01]
The Detroit Free Press reports that the US House voted 265-157 to prevent the Army Corps of Engineers from issuing permit to drill under the Great Lakes. The measure also needs the approval of the U.S. Senate and would only be in effect for the 2002 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1, unless Congress passes a permanent ban. Complete story in the Freep.
Network Upgrade [07.02.01]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that area phone companies are working together to bring high speed DSL access to rural areas of Northern Michigan. Timelines run from a year to longer before we'll see the services. Read more in the Record-Eagle.
South Manitou Roads [07.03.01]
The Leelanau Enterprise reported last week that the Traverse Group of the Sierra Club is opposing Leelanau County's resolution to retain right of way ownership of County roadways on South Manitou Island. Read the Enterprise story and talk about it in the Leelanau Forum.
