Anchor Day [06.22.00]
The annual Empire Anchor Day will be held on Saturday, July 15th at 1 PM. This years theme is MILLENNIUM MADNESS (or the year of our discontent). Everyone is welcome to join the parade. They are looking for music and creative floats. The rules are: Be at the Empire Lions Park at 12:30 for line up. You must be able to go through town twice and, finally, if you are a politician you can't hold up the line or they will place you after the horses. Call Parade Chairman Mary-Kate Chalup @ 326-5618 or see her at Deering's Market in Empire.

Hunger Site [06.23.00]
It's a slow news day and we feel compelled to point you to The Hunger Site. The site allows you to donate food for the relatively small price of looking at a couple of ads. Well worth it, so click once a day!

Rural Views [06.26.00]
Don't miss "Visions of Rural Sleeping Bear", showing the month of July at the Traverse Area District Library. Paintings and photographs depicting the historic and cultural landscape of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore from local artists including Peggy Hawley, Tom Kachadurian, Ken Richmond, Suzanne Wilson and William Wilson. 4th of July [06.27.00]
One week till the Fourth. Here's what we know so far:
  • Leland:
    Kids games and bike decorating will be held at Hancock Field in Leland at noon. The parade starts at 3 PM. Fireworks will be held at dark on the Lake Michigan beach.
  • Glen Arbor:
    Join the folks in Glen Arbor for the annual flag raising at Old Settlers Park. The parade starts at noon in the village of Glen Arbor. No word yet on their fireworks!!
  • Northport:
    Dogs on Parade at 1 PM. 10th Annual Shoreline Volleyball Tournament from 8 am - 5 pm. Fireworks at dark.
4th of July Events

Agency on Aging [06.28.00]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that Benzie, Grand Traverse and Manistee counties have sent letters to the Area Agency on Aging saying they will not approve the Agency's multiyear spending plan. You can get the story in the Record-Eagle and/or visit the Agency on Aging web site.
