Suttons Bay Advances to Regional Soccer Final [Jun 9, 2005]
Suttons Bay girls soccer team notched a 1-0 win yesterday over Fremont in the Division 3 Regional opener. The Lady Norse will face Ludington this Saturday (Jun 11) at noon in Big Rapids. Complete schedule at MHSAA.com and Record-Eagle story.
Sewage Treatment in the News [Jun 10, 2005]
The Leelanau Enterprise reports that rather than pay $45,000 per year for pumping, Tim Barr, owner of Art's in Glen Arbor will be building a septage disposal system. Jim and Madeline Houdek (Houdek's Pumping Service) have also proposed to build a waste treatment facility in Centerville Township, but the Planning & Zoning Board denied their request. Troubling News from Fishtown [Jun 13, 2005]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle has a feature on the uncertain future of Leland's Fishtown that states that owner Bill Carlson is prepared to sell the historic property. The Fishtown Preservation Society is trying to buy the property and keep it intact as both a historic and commercial attraction. Baseball & Soccer Regionals [Jun 13, 2005]
The Suttons Bay Lady Norse lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to Ludington (tied at the end of 2nd 15 minute overtime, lost shootout!) on Saturday in state soccer regionals. Leland's baseball team fell 11-0 to a tough Holton squad (who went on the blank Mesick 10-0) in Regional action. Congratulations to both teams on great seasons!! Prep roundup from the Record-Eagle.
Big Slow (Father's Day) Picnic
This Sunday (Jun 19), the local chapter of the Slow Foods USA is planning their first family picnic. The picnic will be held on the Building 50 lawn (State Hospital Grounds, Traverse City) from. Slow Food USA is an educational organization dedicated to promoting stewardship of the land and ecologically sound food production & area chefs, live music and informational booths will be on hand.
Nice Weather, but Bad for Farmers
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that for farmers in Leelanau County and the surrounding area, June's .3" of rain has not been welcome. Normal rainfall for this time in June would be 1 1/2 inches, and while the hay crop will be significantly down, there's still hope for a good corn harvest.
