Leelanau Growers Turn to Japanese Bees [May 20, 2005]
The Leelanau Enterprise has an excellent feature on Leelanau County cherry growers who are working with the NM Hort Station to introduce a bee native to Japan. Researchers believe that just 250 horn-faced bees can do the pollinating work of 80,000 honey bees (!) and are active at lower temperatures than honey bees. Read Hive of activity in the Enterprise.
Leelanau Museum Opens Anishnabek Exhibit [May 23, 2005]
The Leelanau Historical Museum announces the opening of its long awaited Traditional Anishnabek Arts visible storage exhibition room on May 28, 2005. The display features the Museum's signature collection of black ash baskets and quillwork on birch bark which are primarily the work of the Leelanau Peninsula's Odawa artists. Museum web site.
Memorial Day Weekend Plant Sales [May 25, 2005]
There will be a pair of plant sales this weekend. The Cedar Perennial Plants Sale, a fundraiser for the Cedar Area Community Foundation) will be held this Saturday (May 28) at the parking lot north of the Cedar Fire Department from 9 AM - 3 PM (or until sold out). In Leland, the Perennial & Rescued Wildflower Sale, which benefits garden upkeep and has GREAT plants will take place Friday (9-4), Saturday (9-4) and Sunday (12-3) at the Village Green in Leland.
