Collaboration, Regional Management on Horizon for Small Districts [May 12, 2005]
The Detroit News had a feature profiling the difficulties of small schools that highlighted Northport & Suttons Bay. Legislation is now being drafted that would provide a $200,000 grant to a group of intermediate school districts to develop regional cooperation models for managing schools. Gov. Granholm also wants the power to merge boundaries of districts that don't cooperate. Read Collaboration may be small schools' key to survival in the Detroit News.

Sugar Loaf Golf Courses, Property & Sewer Purchased [May 13, 2005]
The Leelanau Enterprise and the Traverse City Record-Eagle have stories on the purchase of 450 acres in the Sugar Loaf area including two golf courses (King's Challenge and Sleeping Bear Golf Clubs), a sewage treatment plant and other properties by Florida real estate developers. Empire Asparagus Festival [May 16, 2005]
The Asparagus Festival will be held this Saturday (May 21). The event includes a 5K Fun Run/Walk, kids' games, cream of asparagus soup sale, asparagus recipe/cooking contest, parade, garden walk, dinner and a dance. Visit the Empire Asparagus Festival web site.

Jazz Tap Classes [May 17, 2005]

Winemakers Have Mixed Feelings About Ruling [May 18, 2005]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that area vintners are happy with a US Supreme Court ruling that may allow them to ship their wine to customers in other states but are concerned with that state lawmakers or the Michigan Liquor Control Commission might act to prohibit shipping wine anywhere.
