Leelanau School Federation? [March 9, 2006]
The Leelanau Enterprise reports that a federated county school system could allow the four public districts on the Leelanau Peninsula to merge administration and support functions while maintaining separate governance and education functions. As three of Leelanau's districts do not levy the 18-mill maximum and a consolidated school district would likely require the schools to levy 18-mills, consolidation is unlikely. Leelanau Basketball Districts [March 9, 2006]
Last night Northport topped Lake Leelanau-St Mary 53-47. In the second game, Leelanau School fell to TC Christian 63-51. Northport & TC Christian will meet in the final on Friday (Mar 10) at 7 PM at Traverse City Christian. In Class C action, Suttons Bay fell to Traverse City St. Francis 75-53.
Maple Syrup Time! [March 10, 2006]
The Leelanau Enterprise talks with Tom Casier of Empire, one of the few remaining commercial-scale producers of maple syrup in Leelanau County who reports that warmer weather has caused the sap to start running. Two Leelanau Volleyball Teams Advance to State Quarterfinals [March 13, 2006]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that Suttons Bay rallied back from the brink of elimination to defeat Lake City (22-25, 24-26, 27-25, 25-15, 15-7) in a gripping Class C regional title final (Read Suttons Bay rallies past Lake City in regional final). The Norse move on to face Calumet Tuesday (Mar 14) in the Class C Quarterfinal at Rudyard at 7:30 PM. In Class D Regional action, Leland (64-4) waltzed through the Arenac Eastern regional without losing a game (Read Leland goes 6-0 to win third straight regional). The Lady Comets head to Mt Pleasant-Beal City to face Beal City on Tuesday (Mar 14) at 7 PM.
Northport Wins District Basketball Title [March 13, 2006]
On Friday Northport defeated TC Christian 49-43 to capture the District title. The Wildcats will play in the regional opener at Traverse City West at 7 PM on Wednesday (Mar 15).
New Lakeview Winery to Open [March 14, 2006]
Michigan wine writer Sandra Silfven had a feature last week on the plans of Alan Eaker and family to open Longview Winery in Leelanau County, with 10 acres of mature vineyards next to Bel Lago's biggest vineyard. There will be an offsite tasting room in the village of Cedar (at the site of the former Eddie G's) alongside the new Cedar Rustic Inn, a regional American restaurant and an art gallery. Leland's Alisha Glass Named Miss Volleyball [March 14, 2006]
The Detroit Free Press reports that Leland's Alisha Glass was named Michigan's Miss Volleyball by the Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association. Alisha has served on three straight regional winning teams, played in the Class D 2005 state championship match and is the first Leland student-athlete to win a major athletic award since Julie Polakowski won Miss Basketball in 1981. She owns the national record for aces in a season (296), career aces (685) and career kills (2,686). Read Glass best in state in the Freep.

Suttons Bay dealt Calumet its first loss of the season 19-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-20 in Class C Volleyball Quarterfinals Tuesday night Read Suttons Bay hands Calumet its 1st loss. The Lady Norse (52-13-6) face Union City (45-9-9) on Friday at 3:45 at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. In Class D action, Leland dispatched Beal City 25-8, 25-7, 25-15 Read Comets move on to semis for third straight year. The Lady Comets (65-4) will face perennial foe Adrian Lenawee Christian (40-13-2) at WMU on Thursday (Mar 16) at 3:45 PM. Congratulations to both programs!!
