Cherry Marketing Order [03.09.00]
A petition is being considered to ammend the Federal Cherry Marketing Order to restrict the amount of tart cherries every one of nine US districts can release to the market in years of oversupply. Currently, the order only restricts production in distrits that produce over 15 million pounds. US cherry production is consistently above consumption levels with (on average) about 308 million pounds produced with a usage of 285 million pounds.

Glen Lake defeated Suttons Bay 49-45 to take the area Class C crown. Northport was victorious as well, beating TC Christian 69-52. The Leland volleyball team defeated Pellston and Wolverine.
Platte River Fish Hatchery [03.13.00]
The Detroit Free Press reports that the Platte Lake Improvement Association and the State of Michigan have reached an agreement that will end over a decade of disputes concerning phosophorus discharge from the Platte River State Fish Hatchery. The hatchery provides all of the 1.7 million coho salmon and most of the 7.4 million chinook salmon stocked in Michigan lakes. Click for the complete story in the Freep.

Behind torrid free throw shooting Glen Lake managed to defeat McBain Tuesday night 49-45 in the Class C Regionals. The Lakers play Charlevoix on tonight (Thursday) at Houghton Lake. Point Betsie Lighthouse [03.14.00]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle has a story on the uncertain future of the Point Betsie Light in Benzie County. The Great Lakes Lightkeepers Association and the Northwest Michigan Maritime Museum have expressed interest in taking it over but no agreement has been reached. Leland Volleyball [03.15.00]
The Leland volleyball team faced a tough Lake Linden-Hubbell team in the Class D Semifinal last night but pulled it all together to advance to the state quarterfinals behind strong performances by Jenny Erhardt, Katie Culman and Ashley Bouckaert. Leland lost the first match 15-10 and trailed in the second match before coming back to win 15-10. The Comets won the final 15-8 and move on to the Class D Semis this Friday vs. New Lothrop at Western Michigan University at 11:30 AM.
