March Madness Report [Feb 7, 2005]
In Girls Volleyball, Suttons Bay topped Pellston & Kingsley to advance to the Quarterfinals where they will face Iron Mountain at 7 PM on Tuesday night (Mar 8). In Class D, Leland defeated Bay City All Saints & Buckley to move to the quarters as well where they will meet Auburn Hills Oakland Christian at Standish-Sterling at 7 PM on Tuesday (Mar 8). In Class D Boys Basketball Districts on Friday, Northport defeated St. Marys. The Wildcats will face Class D powerhouse Bellaire Tuesday night at Traverse City West. Leelanau Sports page.
Northern Michigan Initiative Proposed [Feb 8, 2005]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that 3 northern Michigan Republicans are rolling out a plan, dubbed the Northern Michigan Initiative, to boost area's economy and promote regional tourism. It would create a Great Lakes Recreational Pass, allowing visitors to purchase one pass to gain entrance to Michigan and neighboring parks and recreation areas. Also proposed are a single business tax credit to maintain and invest in short-line railroad tracks and a plan to channel Community Development Block Grants to rural areas. Suttons Bay & Leland Advance, Northport Falls [Feb 9, 2005]
In Girls Volleyball Quarterfinals last night, Suttons Bay managed to put away a tough Iron Mountain squad 25-15, 25-23, 25-23. The Lady Norsemen (now 42-9-6) will face Blissfield (45-6-4) at 3:45 pm in the Class C Semifinals on Thursday (Mar 10) at University Arena, Kalamazoo. In Class D, Leland (65-7) defeated Auburn Hills Oakland Christian, 25-22, 25-14, 25-17 and will meet Adrian Lenawee Christian (34-16-1) at 2 pm in Kalamazoo. Finals are on Saturday -- here's hoping both are still in the hunt! In the Class D Boys Basketball Regionals last night, Northport played tough but ultimately fell to Bellaire 72-56 (Read Bellaire holds off Northport in the Record-Eagle. Congratulations Wildcats!
