Tentative Fishtown Deal Reached [March 3, 2006]
The Leelanau Enterprise reports that the Fishtown Preservation Society has come to a tentative agreement to purchase the properties on the north side of the Leland River known as Fishtown from the Carlson family. Bill Carlson was especially pleased that commercial fishing will remain more than a facade in future Fishtown. The deal takes in Manitou Fishing Company holdings including fishing tugs Janice Sue and Joy, related equipment including nets, and licenses - which would be leased back to the Carlson family. Talk of Massive Leelanau Wind Farm [March 4, 2006]
The Leelanau Enterprise reports that a national wind energy energy developer hopes to build 50 to 60 massive windmills on about 8,000 acres of farmland in Centerville Township and sell green electrical power to utilities in the region. Each wind turbine is nearly 400 feet tall and takes up about three-eights of an acre. Noble Environmental Power is also developing a wind farm in Michigan's Thumb. Managing Director Peter Mastic said "Our goal is not to change the underlying use of the land. We want to preserve farmland. However, farmers will also be able to farm wind over the top of their land, and earn money for it." Centerville Township farmer Jerry Kelenske said "My guess is that we'll hear from some part-time residents or tourists concerned about changing the landscape or the view, but for farmers, it's a good deal. Leelanau Volleyball Districts [March 7, 2006]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that Suttons Bay (49-13-5) rolled past Mancelona, Charlevoix and Traverse City St. Francis to claim a Class C district title on Saturday. The will play in the regional tournament at Charlevoix on Saturday. Leland (62-4) topped Northport and Central Lake to win another Class D district championship and move on to the regionals at Twining Arenac Eastern.
Leelanau Basketball Districts [March 8, 2006]
In Class C basketball action, Suttons Bay edged Glen Lake Monday night 55-52 (Read Suttons Bay slips past Glen Lake again). Suttons Bay will faced the powerful Traverse City St. Francis on Wednesday night at 7:45 PM. In Class D districts Monday, Traverse City Christian trounced Leland 63-41 on the stregth of a 39-15 rebounding edge (Read Sabres cut through Leland). On Wednesday (Mar 8) at Traverse City Christian, Northport faces Lake Leelanau-St Mary at 6 PM and Leelanau School meets TC Christian at 8 PM with the final on Friday.
Continued Wine Boom Seen for Leelanau & Surrounding Area
On Saturday the Traverse City Record-Eagle reported that area vintners expect both the number of local wineries and vineyards to continue to grow in Leelanau and Old Mission and also to spread to Antrim & Benzie counties. Michigan presently has around 43 commercial wineries - almost half in the Grand Traverse area - that produce more than 200,000 cases of wine annually.
