Global Warning [02.24.00]
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reports that a string of 16 consecutive months with record high global mean average temperatures likely means that global warming is proceeding far faster than expected. Thomas R. Karl, director of NOAA's National Climatic Data Center and colleagues conclude that there is only a small chance that the string of record high temperatures in 1997-1998 was simply an unusual event, rather than a change point, the start of a new and faster ongoing trend.

The springlike weather we've been having has taken its toll on Sugar Loaf -- the resort closed last weekend for skiing.

High Speed Internet [02.28.00]
The Traverse City Record Eagle reports that Ameritech will roll out high speed Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) service in the Traverse City area later this year. DSL works though your existing copper phone line and is about 200 times faster than a regular phone connection.

State Ski Championships [02.29.00]
Glen Lake's Peter Fisher won the slalom and giant slalom and Lauren Teed (of Leland, skiing with Glen Lake) won the slalom, but the Petoskey boys and Harbor Springs girls won the Class B-C-D state titles Monday at Nub's Nob. Other top ten finishers from Leelanau were Matt Wiesen of Glen Lake (slalom and GS) and Nick Stanek of Suttons Bay (slalom and GS as well).
