Collaboration Between Leelanau Schools [February 23, 2006]
The Leelanau Enterprise reports that representatives from Leelanau county schools met last night to discuss the future of education in the county and how schools might collaborate to deal with declining student populations and revenues. Glen Lake is confronting an anticipated $700,000 shortfall in the coming budget year while Suttons Bay is facing cuts of $500,000 or more in the next school year. Note: as a school board member in attendence, I can say that the shared urgency and spirit of cooperation were very promising!

Reception for Lynn Rae Perkins [February 24, 2006]
There will be a reception this Saturday (Feb 25) from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Dennos Museum in Traverse City honor the 2006 Newbery Book author, Lynn Rae Perkins from Suttons Bay for her young adult novel, "Criss Cross". Call 256-9152 for more info and/or read Michigan Author is 2006 Newbery Medal Winner.

GT County Proposal Could Jump Leelanau Septic Pumping Bills [February 27, 2006]
The Leelanau Enterprise reports that a plan being considered by Grand Traverse County officials could require Leelanau County residents to pay more to have their septic tanks pumped. A proposal by the Grand Traverse County Board of Public Works to impose a provision of state law that may require septage haulers within a 15-mile radius of Grand Traverse County's new sewage treatment plant to haul septic tank waste there for treatment rather than apply the waste onto approved parcels of land in Leelanau County and elsewhere.
