Harwood Resignation Leaves Suttons Bay, Glen Lake without Superintendent [February 16, 2006]
The Leelanau Enterprise reports that the Suttons Bay School Board accepted the resignation of dual superintendent Tom Harwood Monday night. Harwood, who has also served as the chief administrator for Glen Lake since July, submitted his resignation Feb. 9. Harwood has accepted a position as executive director of student services for Grosse Pointe schools and will begin April 1. Read Districts seek school chief.
Park Open House Well Attended, Wilderness a Hot Topic [February 17, 2006]
The Leelanau Enterprise reports that nearly 100 local citizens showed up at an open house Tuesday at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Visitor Center in Empire to learn and offer comments about the creation of a new 20-year General Management Plan for the park. Uproar over Wilderness Designation torpedoed the last GMP process and it looks as if the park will be focusing on explaining what that means. According to Asst. Superintendent Tom Ulrich "You can ski, hike or snowshoe in a wilderness area. A wilderness area is designed for recreation and designed to be accessible, it's just for non-mechanized recreation." Port Oneida Play Subject of Dinner Theater [February 20, 2006]
The Leelanau Players and Leelanau Historical Society presents "A Stone That Rises", a one-act play about the life and times of the Burfiend family who were one of the first settlers of Port Oneida written by local playwright, Anne Marie Oomen. Dinner theater performances include a themed dinner and will take place at Samuel's Restaurant in Suttons Bay on Friday & Saturday (March 3 & 4) and at The Bluebird Restaurant in Leland on Saturday, March 11. Tickets are $35 per person and are available at The Painted Bird in Suttons Bay, The Cottage Book Shop in Glen Arbor and Leelanau Books in Leland. Leelanau Cherry Blossom Historical Tour to be Held This Spring [February 21, 2006]
The Detroit Free Press has a brief writeup on the Leelanau Cherry Blossom Historical Tour to be held May 16-19, 2006. It offers four days and three nights of history and scenery, includes lodging and meals, and is $925 per couple. The Traverse City Record-Eagle has a review of "OMENA: A Place in Time," by Amanda J. Holmes. The book is sponsored by the Omena Historical Society and the reviewer says that the town and surrounding area is captured in myth and fact, memory and demographics, written and oral history, and local legend.
