Permit Issued for Narrows Marina [February 2, 2006]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that the state has finalized a permit for a new marina along the Lake Leelanau Narrows. The permit will allow Wayne Tyge and the Narrows Development Co. to construct 14 boat slips along the Narrows, between north and south Lake Leelanau. The Lake Leelanau Lake Association continues to cite concerns about boater safety and shoreline and ecological damage. Read Narrows marina gets state permit.
Sugar Loaf Resort Sewer Cut Off, Failure to Pay Alleged [February 3, 2006]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that Sugar Loaf Service Co., owner of the two golf courses and the sewer plant at the resort, cut off sewer service to the lodge in a dispute over almost $90,000 in unpaid sewer bills. They alleged the resort's owner, Kate Wickstrom, hasn't made any sewer payments since taking over the property almost a year ago. Empire Winterfest 2006 [February 6, 2006]
The annual Empire Winterfest will be held this Friday - Sunday (Feb 10-12). Activities include pool tournament/fundraiser, bon fire, ice skating and of course the Polar Bear Dip! More information at the Empire Business Association web site or call Jan at 326-5439.
Leelanau Children's Center Winter Carnival [February 7, 2006]
This Saturday (Feb 11) from noon to 3 PM at the Leland Public School Gym, the Leelanau Children's Center presents their annual Winter Carnival. It's a fun filled day for all of the family featuring tons of games, great raffle prizes and food and beverages that benefits the LCC's programs. Michigan Radio's Jack Lessenberry spoke with George Weeks about changes he has seen over a half century in the political arena and his observations of the current political scene. Weeks has been in the world of Michigan politics and government for a longer period of time than just about anyone and worked for Governor William Milliken as a press secretary and top aide. He plans to retire from daily journalism this spring and devote himself to writing books.
