Sleeping Bear Dunes Fire Policy Comment Sought [01.21.05]
The Leelanau Enterprise reports that officials of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore are seeking public comment on an environmental assessment conducted for a fire management plan that will outline how the National Park Service should deal with wildland fires and conduct prescribed fires. Go Indirectly to Jail [01.22.05]
The Leelanau Enterprise reports that the county board of commissioners voted Tuesday (7-0) to authorize Sheriff Oltersdorf to spend up to $40 per inmate per day to board prisoners that are overcrowding the county jail. The new Law Enforcement Center was supposed to be ready for occupancy January 1 but won't be ready until March. Read the Enterprise story.

Interlochen to Build Film School [01.25.05]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that the Interlochen Center for the Arts plans to build a $4 million film studies center. The Aaron and Helen L. DeRoy Center for Film Studies will contain a film studio, editing and production areas, student living areas and a movie screening room and curriculum will include production, screenwriting, film history and aesthetics, editing, sound design, acting and cinematography. From Women's Hands [01.26.05]
Authors, film creators, visual artists including art and high craft, and musicians are invited to the 3rd annual From Women's Hands art exhibit and sale. This Juried show (May 2005) will feature over 100 artists and application forms (app deadline Feb 26) are available by calling 231-218-0096 or emailing Jennifer and at the From Women's Hands web site.

Leelanau Historical Museum Hosts Valentine Workshop [01.27.05]
The Museum and Manitou Trail Chapter of Questers host an annual Valentine Workshop next Saturday (Feb 5) from 1-4 PM at the Leelanau Community Cultural Center in Leland. All ages are invited to create fun or fancy Valentine cards. The cost of the workshop is $3 and includes materials and refreshments. For more information call 231/256-7475.
