Remembering Martin Luther King, Jr. [January 12, 2006]
This Sunday (Jan 15) at 6:00 PM at the Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City, the Traverse City Human Rights Commission presents "Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebrated and Remembered". The featured keynote speaker will be Tricia Harris, Executive Director of Social Genesis, Inc. More information on this FREE event.
2% Can Really Add Up [January 13, 2006]
The Leelanau Enterprise has a detailed feature on the 2% request process that is well worth a read. Every year, the county board prioritizes and submits requests for 2 percent casino revenue funding of the Tribal Council of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. The payments from the tribe, expected to be over $1 millon in 2006, are made to the county in lieu of local property taxes. Read County struggles with '2%' process.
Leelanau Recall Petitions Still Active [January 16, 2006]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle posted an update this weekend on recall efforts in the village of Northport and Elmwood Township. Opponents of the proposed municipal sewer in Northport are seeking to recall all seven village council members. They claim to have the 75 signatures required, but are gathering extra. A group of Elmwood Township residents also seeks to gather 511 signatures from registered township voters to force a recall election for supervisor Derith Smith. It is too late for the February 28th ballot, so elections would now (at the earliest) be in May of 2005. Read Two recall efforts continue.
Liz Shimek Sets MSU Rebounding/Scoring Mark [January 17, 2006]
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that Michigan State's standout forward Liz Shimek grabbed 10 rebounds in the ninth-ranked Spartans' 79-63 win over Wisconsin last Thursday to reach 1,000 for her career. The Glen Lake grad became the first player in MSU women's basketball history to reach the 1,000 mark in both points and rebounds and her 1,515 points make her only the fifth player in school history to amass 1,500 points. Blue Oyster Cult @ Leelanau Sands
70s rockers Blue Oyster Cult will appear at the Leelanau Sands Casino this Saturday (Jan 21) at 8 PM. Ticket & concert information from the casino. Full disclosure: Blue Oyster Cult (BOC) is one of my personal all-time favorite bands. The current Northern Express has an excellent interview with them that discusses (among other things) how they were miscast as satanists. Regrettably, the article isn't online but you can probably pick up a copy.
