Broadsides of 'Older Love' by Jim Harrison

Older Love Broadside - Click for Larger ViewThis letter "L" broadside is framed to museum quality standards by State of the Art, Traverse City, in a cream linen matt with a gold fillet. The exquisite frame is 3/4 inch water-gilded on blue clay. The finished size is 16 x 20 3/4.

Jim Harrison is the author of three volumes of novellas, seven novels, nine collections of poetry and a collection of non-fiction. He has been awarded a National Endowment for the Arts grant and a Gug-genheim Fellowship. His work has been published in twenty-two languages.

This broadside of "Older Love" was designed, typeset, and printed on a 1908 Chandler & Price Press by Sam Hamill at Copper Canyon Press, using Lutetia and Italian Old Style types on Fabriano Rosapina paper with a photo-engraved illustration by artist Philip Levine. The edition size is 276, numbered 1-200, lettered A-Z, with 50 copies hors commerce. All copies are signed by Jim Harrison.

Harrison's poems rarely appear in broadside form, and this limited edition of "Older Love" is unique for two reasons: it is the first public appearance of a Harrison poem since his life's work of poetry was published in The Shape of the Journey and it is the only instance of a Harrison poem printed exclusively as a broadside.

What is a broadside?
Jim HarrisonHistorically, broadsides, a sheet of paper printed on one side, contained a song or ballad and were sold by wandering peddlers in Britain from the 16th century to the beginning of the 20th century, when mass-circulation newspapers superceded them. Although broadsides were supplanted by more efficient modes of communication, the form remained popular among poets. As printing became more mechanized, printing text from handset type using an old press became an art form. Today, broadsides are often a collaboration between a poet and a print artist and the product is highly collectible.
