Chatham's paintings and original lithographs have been exhibited at most of the major museums in the west, at various colleges and universities, and during the past thirty years, in more than 130 one-man exhibitions at private galleries. His work has also been highlighted in England, France and Japan. Chatham is represented in nearly three thousand public and private collections throughout the world. In 1982, Chatham began printmaking and today is considered one of the world's foremost lithographers. His work is available from selected dealers throughout the country, including Suttons Bay Galleries, as well as at his own studio in Livingston, Montana. To fully appreciate the meaning of the term original lithograph, it is important to understand just how one is produced. During the production of an original lithograph, the artist is directly involved in hand-drawing each plate, choosing and mixing each ink and approving each color as it comes off the press. As many as fifty different ink shades or fifty separate plates may be used in one lithograph and could very well require as many as 180 hours of the artist's and printer's time. "Looking at one of his lithographs," a reviewer once wrote "has the bracing effect of walking out of a crowded room into the open air." Winter Light, framed to museum quality standards by State of the Art, Traverse City, will be in the set design of Love Letters. It is an original lithograph created in 1992. The print was drawn from small pencil sketches and memory at Ink on Paper in Seattle. The edition consists of 275 numbered pieces and 25 artist's proofs. The aluminum plates on which the images were drawn have all been destroyed. Thirty-two plates were used on this print.
