Planning for the Year 2000
.plan: Unix feature intended to be used to keep other apprised of one's location and near-future plans.

Planning for Y2K presents somewhat of a challenge. For starters, since no one knows the extent (if any) of the Year 2000 Problem, there is no easily defined goal to strive towards. About all a business, organization or individual can do is the begin preparations at the basic level and move upward and outward if time & funds permit.

Use the basic plan below to develop your own Y2K action plan. Where we have more information, the title appears as a hyperlink. We advise you to seek additional consultation with trained professionals.

A Basic Plan
  1. Test your computer(s) or network.
As the parable instructs, don't go trying to get that dust speck out of your supplier's operation until you've got the planks out of your own.
  2. Determine your key providers.
For business & organizations: banks, utilities, suppliers, government agencies, etc. For individuals: same as above plus stores and in-home machinery.
  3. Contact key providers for information.
Ask for Y2K compliance statements. Failing that, any information on efforts, plans, etc. is better than none.
  4. Evaluate findings & take action.
If providers are not compliant or slow to act, consider alternative suppliers.
  5. Tell someone about what you've done.
Y2K could be the biggest event in some time. Every compliant business or individual in your community strengthens the community.
