EXPOSURES '97
Ten years ago, a group of Leelanau County parents and educators asked themselves this question: how does our community show support for student endeavors in the arts? Their answer was to create EXPOSURES, published each year since then to showcase student efforts in art and writing.

A collaborative effort by Leelanau County schools, public and private, EXPOSURES brings together teachers, administrators and community volunteers to celebrate the creativity of students in grades 7-12.

Hundreds of drawings, photographs, sculptures, essays, stories and poems are submitted each year, and competition is tough. This year, 833 pieces were submitted, and 170 were chosen for publication. But publication is only part of the EXPOSURES process. Students who submit work for consideration are invited to review the work of other students through the Peer Evaluation process, openinga dialogue with other student artists and deepening their own awareness of the creative process as they do.

As we publish this 10th Anniversary issue of EXPOSURES, special thanks go to David Viskochil, Lita Coleman and Adele Hungerford for their creative vision. We also thank those volunteers who worked on past issues and those who bring you EXPOSURES 97:

We appreciate the continuing support from school administrators and boards of education for this project. Donations from the Suttons Bay Art Festival, Leelanau Youth Advisory Council of the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation, Youth Advisory Council of the Leelanau Township Foundation, Chamber Arts North and generous individuals are gratefully acknowledged.

As in the past, the youth of Leelanau County speak their minds in the pages of EXPOSURES. With clay and paint, pen, ink and computer, they tell us who they are and of what they dream. Listen to their tales: of innocence lost, bitter winds, magic mirrors, of nearly unspeakable sorrows, and giddy games under the street lamp---itŐs all here, and more.

Join in the celebration of student creativity. Enjoy EXPOSURES 97!
