Old Indian Hiking and Ski Trail

dune grass by Latitude 45The trail is mainly flat and straight with some gentle hills and curves. However, there is one steep downhill run with a sharp turn on the advanced loop at the northeast corner of the trail. The trail leads you through a coastal forest to a scenic view of Lake Michigan with its neighboring sand dunes. Much of the trailside vegetation is pine-oak forest. This is the typical plant community of the coastal lowlands. Only a few thousand years ago, lake levels were higher and this area was submerged. You may notice some hemlocks and beeches along the section of trail farthest from Lake Michigan. This area has been above water longer than the zone closer to the lake. Plants are sensitive to their environment. Different conditions of soil, sunlight, moisture and weather produce different plant communities.
