In 1998 the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore began collecting user fees. The fee collection hasn't generated much more than a few grumbles from local residents.
The Park Service offers their viewpoint in the document Why User Fees?. There's a discussion about it in the Leelanau Forum to which you are encouraged to add your comments. Fee Schedule ENTRANCE FEES/PASSES (All passes are non-transferable) PER PERSON (foot, bicycle, motorcycle (per rider), organized groups, valid 7 days from date of issue): $5.00 PARK PASS (Valid 7 days from date of issue): $10.00 ANNUAL PARK PASS (Valid 12 months from date of issue): $20.00 COMMERCIAL TOUR VECHICLES GOLDEN ACCESS PASSPORT (Lifetime, Permanent Disability): N/C GOLDEN AGE PASSPORT (Lifetime, 62 and over): $10.00 GOLDEN EAGLE (Valid one year from date of issue, all ages): $50.00 GOLDEN EAGLE HOLOGRAM (Upgrade to the National Parks Pass): $15.00 (GOLDEN ACCESS & GOLDEN AGE Camping Fees are half-price) All passes are to be displayed on the dashboard of your vehicle while in the park.
