Leelanau Almanac for the week of May 4 - May 10, 2006

Filed under: Leelanau, almanac, weather — Andrew McFarlane @ 6:30 am

Orchard Silo

Cherry blossoms bloomed and began to fade, all in one week. It also looks like we may have LILACS in bloom as early as this weekend (earliest I can remember), and we moved past black morels to white/blonde morels.

News from the Week

The week's top story was news that the Leelanau Conservancy is seeking to preserve the 145-acre DeYoung family farmstead on Cedar Lake in Elmwood Township. Plans call for preserving it as a natural area open to the public for hiking, fishing, cross-country skiing and wildlife observation but the Conservancy has raised just 10% of the $2 million required.

Other stories include news that pets are banned from beaches where piping plovers nest in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (includes some great piping plover links), plans for Sugar Loaf being reviewed by Cleveland Township, a local columnist wondering why Sugar Loaf and its 500 lost jobs can't find state government support, and a nice photo of cherry orchards in bloom.

  2. The county site lists 2 access sites on S Lake Leelanau:
SE Lake Leelanau: Bingham Road and Co. Rd. 641
SW Lake Leelanau: Co. Rd. 643, 1/2 mile S of Co. Rd. 620

I've been to the SE one on South Lake Leelanau - really more of a place to put your boat in. Not sure about the SW site.
