Glen Lake Issues Layoff Notices for 11 Teachers

The Leelanau Enterprise reports the emotions ran high Monday as the Glen Lake Board of Education took initial steps to address its looming budget crisis by issuing layoff notices to 11 members of its teaching staff. Glen Lake had estimated a $712,430 budget shorfall for the 2006-07 school year unless cuts were made. Teacher Paul Christiansen said "We’ve been disenfranchised ... There's a huge separation between the administration and the board and parents." Board member Virginia Trago said that nobody wanted this but "with finances the way they are … we can’t cut paper and pencils and do away with the (financial) imbalance."
