June 2008

Washed ashore Empire MI beach by 1CherEach month we make a post where you can let people know what you're thinking about stories in the news items, tell about some fun things you did (or want to do) and share your observations of what's happening in the great outdoors.

June in Leelanau means graduation, strawberries, baseball and the return of bare feet and beaches!

This June we're going to join with Absolute Michigan and Taste the Local Difference to promote local food and also to take our coverage of Leelanau County and northern Michigan to a new level!

St. Mary baseball team takes regionals, falls in quarterfinals

Filed under: baseball, lake leelanau, news, sports, st mary — Andrew McFarlane @ 10:23 am

St Marys BaseballThe Leelanau Enterprise has a pair of nice features on St. Mary (with its graduating class of 15) coming from behind to nip the state's #8 ranked team Holton 8-7 and coming from behind again to beat Mesick 8-5 for the school's first-ever Regional trophy.

The Eagles took momentum and a lot of fans to the quarterfinal game in Gaylord:

“I’m not sure there was a lot of traffic in Leelanau County,” said Eagles’ coach Steve Plamondon while reflecting on his squad’s 7-2 loss to Rudyard Tuesday. “We had a huge fan base there.”

St. Mary, which finished the season with a 28-7 record, could not put together another final inning rally in the loss, instead leaving the bases loaded in the seventh on a grounder for the final out in a storybook season.

Read Regional title is one for the St. Mary record book and  in the Enterprise.

Baseball History: Traverse City Resorters

The Record-Eagle also has a great feature on the Resorters, Traverse City's minor league ballclub of the early 1900s that featured future major leaguer Bundy Brief. The team played in the Michigan State League against the Cadillac Chiefs, the Muskegon Lumbermen and the Holland Dutchmen.
