Great Lakes Week takes place October 11-14, 2011 and celebrates one of the world's true natural wonders, the five interconnected Great Lakes. Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior provide jobs, recreation and drinking water to more than 30 million people in the Great Lakes basin. Great Lakes Week is a new partnership to improve the places around the basin where people live, work, learn and play. This week's activities, meetings and conferences bring representatives of the U.S. and Canadian governments together with a broad coalition of public and private groups to highlight efforts to implement solutions for the lakes' most pressing problems. The event is headquartered in a single city for the first time ever and that city is Detroit.
Today's coverage kicks off at noon with an overview of Great Lakes Week, highlights of yesterday's Great Lakes Commission Meeting. Also on tap is the International Joint Commission of US and Canadian government agencies, a report on U.S. and Canadian efforts to restore the chemical, physical and biological diversity of the Great Lakes Basin, updates on critical issues from algae to aquatic invasive species and the Great Lakes Town Hall featuring top officials from both the U.S. and Canada answering on-site and virtual audience questions (Twitter hastag #AskGLW). Much more to follow tomorrow and Friday - check the schedule of events out for an idea.
Facebook is a great way to connect with people who love Leelanau and Northern Michigan, and we'll be featuring some of our favorite Facebook pages on the Leelanau blog. Of course you are invited to share them on the Leelanau.com Facebook page as well!
While sensible people tend to shun the waters of Lake Michigan in October, many of the folks who frequent Northern Michigan Surf on Facebook are excited because the real surfing season is in full swing!
The heart of the page are updates from the admin and others about where the waves are likely to be breaking. You can also let others know where you'll be surfing - a great thing because surfing in the fall (or really any time there are big waves) is not something that you want to do alone.
You can check out some great photos that folks have taken and share your own. They also have a cool video that you'll want to check out!
Beryl Skrocki dropped us a note that they now have a "wave cam" up and running on one of Leelanau County's best surfing beaches in Empire, so we're dusting off our tour of Leelanau County's web cams .Check the links below for views of Empire, Leland, Glen Arbor and Suttons Bay - all from the comfort of your chair!

Last weekend was a beaut!! Sunny & 80s! This week's weather hasn't been as warm as you'd hope - kind of Septemberish - but it beats most places! (view detailed readings)
A magnificent beach along a stretch of Good Harbor Bay. This beach offers clear views out to the islands and has a long sandy beach. Just a few seconds walk south is a stream running from the woods into Lake Michigan. The stream is great for kids to play in, fun to follow into the woods, and nice to just stand in the warmer waters of the stream after a cold dip in Lake Michigan.
Cool things to do: Bring a soccer ball, football, or frisbee to have a rowdy game on the beach, on a windy day bring boogieboards, surfboards, or skimboards and play in the waves, and after all the hard play make sure to stick around to watch the sunset - there is nothing better than watching a sunset over Lake Michigan (don't blink - if you look hard enough you might be able to see the Green Flash when the sun sets).
Between getting my first surfboard (Jamie says make that OUR surfboard) and the fall weather patterns here that seem to pile up the big waves, I've been spending a lot of time in or near the water.
