Lake Leelanau, Michigan

Filed under: Leelanau, lake leelanau, leelanau.com, map, michigan, st mary, travel — Luke @ 11:18 am

The town of Lake Leelanau is located where Lake Leelanau itself narrows. The Native Americans who lived in the area called the lake "lee-lan-au" which means "delight of life." French settlers were the first to arrive in the area, coming from Canada, in the mid 1900s. They called the settlement Le Naro. The early white settlers called the lake Carp Lake. In 1854 a dam was built in Leland, which caused the lake to rise 12 feet. In 1855 the Shaub family arrived in the area and began farming and building a vineyard. In 1867 Andre de Beloit, a French fur trader tried drilling for oil and instead hit an artesian spring at the sight of the present day Fountain Point Resort. The spring is still gushing today. In 1871 the village acquired a post office with the name "Provement." In 1887 St. Mary of the Assumption, a Catholic school, was built. The two-story wooden building burned down in the 1920s, and a brick building was built where the old wooden building used to stand. Saint Mary of Lake Leelanau Catholic Church and School is still in operation today. In 1924 the post office changed its name from Provement to Lake Leelanau. Today Lake Leelanau is located in the hear of the Leelanau Peninsula. Located on M-22 between Suttons Bay and Leland it is a great place to stop by for a quick bite to eat, or a look around town. Kejara's Bridge is a great unique, community based business that has fantastic food for vegetarians, vegans, and carnivores alike. Lake Leelanau is know for its antique shops that are always worth a few minutes spent inside.

March 12

Leland Basketball

The Record-Eagle has a feature on  Leland's 72-45 loss at the hands of Muskegon West Michigan Christian in the Class D quarterfinal:

"I thought we were playing some of our best ball as of late, but we just did not get it going tonight. I give West Michigan Christian credit. They took us out of our game. We had a hard time shooting it over the top. We had a hard time getting it inside. They're a fine basketball team."

Marcus Whittaker paced Leland with 22 points.

"They played great defense," Whittaker said. "Defensively, they were prepared

Congratulations on a great year, Comets!

March 10

The Record-Eagle has a cool feature titled Links to the past that compares Leland's team with the Northport team that Leland coach Jason Stowe played on:

"I was joking with the kids about the unheralded guy hitting that last second shot," Stowe said, "because 20 years ago on the exact same court, the exact same basket, I got the chance to do the exact same thing."

Stowe's buzzer-beater in 1988 propelled Northport to a 67-65 win over Glen Lake in a Class D district final at Central a victory the Wildcats used as a springboard to winning a state championship.

March 6

The Record-Eagle reports that Leland Comets (21-4) pulled out a 48-46 thriller over Bellaire to win the Regional championship. Leland will face Muskegon West Michigan Christian Tuesday's quarterfinal at Traverse City West at 6 PM. Check out Larsen lifts Leland to regional title for more (including photos).

March 4

Leland survived a charge by Mio and went on to a 83-59 victory in the first round of Regionals last night. They will meet Bellaire (who managed to hold off a tough Posen club 67-60) on Wednesday at 7 PM at Traverse City Central.

March 3

Leland captured the District title on Friday night at Northport, handling St. Marys 76-28 to become the last team standing in the 2008 high school basketball tournament.

Leland faces Mio tonight in the Regional opener at Traverse City Central at 7:30 PM with the regional final on Wednesday.

Leland School presents Little Shop of Horrors

Filed under: leland, music, schools, st mary, youth — Andrew McFarlane @ 10:20 am

Little Shop of HorrorsFrom Nov 29 - Dec 9, Leland Public School Drama will present one of the longest running Off-Broadway shows of all time, Little Shop of Horrors. High School students from Leland Public School and St. Mary's of Lake Leelanau, directed by Jeremy John Evans, team up for this affectionate spoof of 1950s sci-fi movies.

A down-and out skid row floral assistant becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Soon "Audrey II" grows into an ill-tempered, R&B-singing carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite, finally revealing itself to be an alien creature poised for global domination!

Shows will begin in Leland's Performing Arts Center at 7 pm on December 6, 7, 8 and 9th. There will also be a 2 pm matinee on December 8th. Call Leland Public School at 256-9857 for more information or to purchase advance tickets. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students.

St. Mary baseball team takes regionals, falls in quarterfinals

Filed under: baseball, lake leelanau, news, sports, st mary — Andrew McFarlane @ 10:23 am

St Marys BaseballThe Leelanau Enterprise has a pair of nice features on St. Mary (with its graduating class of 15) coming from behind to nip the state's #8 ranked team Holton 8-7 and coming from behind again to beat Mesick 8-5 for the school's first-ever Regional trophy.

The Eagles took momentum and a lot of fans to the quarterfinal game in Gaylord:

“I’m not sure there was a lot of traffic in Leelanau County,” said Eagles’ coach Steve Plamondon while reflecting on his squad’s 7-2 loss to Rudyard Tuesday. “We had a huge fan base there.”

St. Mary, which finished the season with a 28-7 record, could not put together another final inning rally in the loss, instead leaving the bases loaded in the seventh on a grounder for the final out in a storybook season.

Read Regional title is one for the St. Mary record book and  in the Enterprise.

Schoolhouse Rock Live at Leland School

Filed under: Leelanau, art, calendar, family, fun, leland, schools, st mary, theater — Andrew McFarlane @ 10:38 am

Schoolhouse Rock Live

Fifty high school and middle school students from Leland Public School and St. Mary's School of Lake Leelanau — will take center stage in a joint production of SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK LIVE!, which debuts Friday at Leland's Performing Arts Center. SHRL! Is a high-energy, colorful musical based on the series of short educational films that aired alongside ABC TV's Saturday morning cartoon lineup throughout most of the 1970s and 80s.

There will be seven shows, starting this Friday, May 11, and continuing on the 12th, 13th, 18th, 19th, and 20th and you can get details and ticket information by calling Leland School at 231-256-9857.

An interesting thing about the performance is that it demonstrates how a public school and a private school are working together to offer arts experiences for their students in a time of dramatically shrinking budgets.

I don't really see any way that I can get out of this post without a YouTube video, so here it is!
