University of Michigan women's rowing team on Lake Leelanau

Recently the University of Michigan women's rowing team traveled to Leelanau County. The Leelanau Enterprise reports that head coach Mark Rothstein said that Lake Leelanau could be one of the best places to row in the state and the entire Midwest:

The team stayed at historic Fountain Point Resort near the Lake Leelanau Narrows, where proprietor Erik Zehender had a 12-by-48-foot floating dock specially built in time to accommodate the U-M team as well as a Lake Leelanau Rowing Club now being formed.

No one had ever brought a rowing club – let alone a top NCAA rowing team – to Lake Leelanau before last week. Zehender said he hopes the U-M visit will attract visits by more rowing clubs to Leelanau County in the years ahead – a boon for local businesses in the sometimes slow fall and spring visitor seasons.

Prior to his visit, Rothstein said he was “testing out the lake to see if it will be a good rowing venue for future trips and races.”

by Holly Wren Spaulding

The renown writer, naturalist, and world explorer, Peter Matthiessen will offer a master class for readers and writers next Friday, October 29 from 10:30 AM-12:30 PM at Fountain Point, an historic resort on the northern shore of Lake Leelanau.  Co-hosted by the resort and Michigan Writers, the presentation precedes his appearance at the Opera House as part of the National Writers Series.

Join this iconic American author in a salon-like setting for a craft talk and discussion about the opportunities and particular challenges facing socially and politically engaged writers at this moment in American history and culture.  The discussion will address issues of craft—both for fiction and non-fiction writers—and include a brief question and answer session.  Coffee and light snacks will be provided.  Participants are encouraged—but not required—to RSVP by calling Fountain Point at 231-256-9800 or emailing info@fountainpointresort.com.  This event is free to members of Michigan Writers.  The general public is most welcome and free-will donations are gladly accepted.  Books will be for sale at this event.

Rediscover Fountain Point

Filed under: beach,history,lake leelanau,lodging,Lodging & Travel,seasons,travel — cherie @ 9:51 am

foutainpointNestled among a wooded country road stretching the distance of South Lake Leelanau, you may be surprised to discover one of the oldest historic resorts in the state of Michigan, second only to the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. Known as Fountain Point, this enchanting hotel and collection of cabins summons guests back to a coveted time in American culture--when family stood at the forefront of our social and communal lives. Building on their own rich family history, brothers Erik Zehender and Theo Early are beginning a new chapter--as proprietors--with minds on a mission, while holding the Fountain Point's core values at heart.

First, to speak of Fountain Point with an eye on the future, one must understand a bit of the resorts past. The "Fountain" sprang up unexpectedly in the mid 1800's, when a French fur trader sank a drill in the sandy shore of Carp Lake, now known as Lake Leelanau. Hoping for oil, he instead struck a gushing geyser of fresh water flowing in a terrestrial river--900 feet deep--far below the glacial substrate that shaped the region and gave birth to Lake Michigan. Ownership of the land changed a few times, then a hotel was built before roads reached that far; families from mid-western states began ferrying from the south end of the lake, gathering at this aqua oasis for fun and relaxation.

In 1936, the depressed economy had whittled the resort's financial strength to the bone. Erik and Theo's great-grandfather, Victor A. Gebhardt, a diamond importer and Cincinnati jeweler (he and wife Blanche had been guests since 1917), purchased the resort and the establishment has remained under the care of this family since. The two men spent the summers of their formative years working for their mother. In that time, they observed and participated in the rich legacy of family traditions brought by their guests; today, some of those same families gather in the exact cabin they have shared for five generations. Under quiet observation, the brothers have relished the power of place and the renewal of family spirit that their guests experienced year after year.

The next generation of leadership at Fountain Point anticipates success and strength. Change is destined to greet the resort, as the brothers bring to life their personal dreams and visions for this historic treasure. Together they have witnessed the erosion of family values and are dually aimed at providing a place where restoration can occur for present and future generations. Collectively, the community and the seasoned guests are likely to benefit, as the new owners bring their rich and fond memories of the past at Fountain Point with their shared vision of the resorts success for years to come.

Check out the Fountain Point website, or drive by the resort on County Rd. 641 just before the village of Lake Leelanau. The place is a pure oasis of fun, old-time family style: without the television. The perfect setting for a romantic and playful wedding, a staff retreat or a family reunion. Turn in and tune up to a big Northern Michigan family adventure!

Leelanau wine comes up big again!

Filed under: lake leelanau,Leelanau, michigan, news, wine — Andrew McFarlane @ 11:15 am

Forty-Five North's 2008 Pinot Noir RoseA Leelanau Peninsula wine, Forty-Five North's 2008 Pinot Noir Rose by Shawn Walters, was awarded the Best Pacific Rim Rose Wine at the 2009 Pacific Rim Wine Competition last week.

There were about 2000 wines (54 Rose and Blush wines) entered by close to 400 wineries and the Rose came in second overall to the Grand Champion (Barbera by Jeff Runquist). The judges were reportedly so upset at the lack of a Best Rose Award that the competition created one!

This is just one more story of how wines from the Leelanau Peninsula are standing tall when compared to the best wines in the world.

Since the picture is tall, I'll say that you can tast wines from Shawn and Leelanau's other excellent winemakers at the Spring Sip & Savor wine tour this weekend. You also have a chance to win prizes including a fabulous vacation package in the PJ Contest!

Leland Falls in Class D Basketball Regional Final

Filed under: basketball,lake leelanau,Leelanau,leland,news,st mary,suttons bay — Andrew McFarlane @ 9:55 am

Leland coach Jason Stowe expected a fantastic game last night and while the 54-52 loss was a heartbreaker, there's no doubt that the game (tied 22-22 at halftime) delivered all that excitement and more. It came down to a final shot and was a tremendous game.

If Ellsworth is the number one team, I think it's pretty clear that Leland was #2 - congratulations on a great season, Leland!

Leland Wins Regional Opener

galen-whittaker-leland-basketballLast night Leland captured the regional opener with an 85-67 victory over Hillman. The Record-Eagle reports that 6' 4" Comet center Galen Whittaker led the way with a season-best 32 points and 16 rebounds. Leland will meet 23-0 and number one Class D Ellsworth in the regional final on Wednesday night at 7 PM.

Leland won the regional crown a year ago, but coach Jason Stowe knows repeating will not be easy. He came away impressed with the Lancers.

"They're No. 1 in the state," Stowe said. "They haven't lost yet. They're a very impressive team. They like to dribble drive. They have great athletes, great shooters, They know how to win -- and that goes a long way this time of year.

"I expect a battle. I think it's going to be a fantastic game."

So does Ellsworth coach Tex Drenth.

"As well as we played (Monday), we'll have to step it up Wednesday night," Drenth said. "Leland's a superb team. This will be the best team we've faced all year. We'll have our work cut out for us, but we're up for the challenge."

Leland Captures District Crown

leland-disctrict-2009On Friday night Leland captured the Class D District title with an 81-55 victory over Lake Leelanau St Mary.

Leland rode a balanced attack to fend off repeated charges by a determined Eagles squad.

The Comets (17-7) move on to meet Hillman in the Regional opener tonight at 7 PM at Traverse City West Senior High. The winner of tonight's game will meet the winner of Mio vs Ellsworth on Wednesday at (I think) 7:30.

In other news, Suttons Bay fell by a score of 60-46 to Forest Area. The Record-Eagle has an article on the game.
