Alligator Hill Trail

Filed under: Leelanau, glen lake, hiking, lake michigan, leelanau.com, map, michigan, travel — Luke @ 10:43 am

Alligator Hill Trail comes equipped with beautiful views of both Lake Michigan and Big Glen Lake. Alligator Hill has a total of nine miles of trail, which are divided into different loops, the hike is very hilly and passes through beautiful Michigan forests.

The 1.5 mile hike from the Stocking Road trailhead to the Islands Lookout on top of Alligator Hill is a relatively gentle uphill walk through Maple-Beech forest on an old road bed. The view from the Lookout is outstanding. On a clear day, you can see North and South Manitou Island and Sleeping Bear Point. Quite often South Fox Island will also be visible. There is a bench at the lookout, so you can take some time to relax and enjoy the view before continuing your hike. From this vantage point you will often see a freighter making its way through the Manitou Passage.

For more information on the Alligator Hill Trail, feel free to visit the National Parks Service's website.

Cool things to do: hike the trail, run the trail - which is very hard, ride the trail -horses are also allowed. Search the undergrowth for signs of different animal life. Do not bike the trail. Stop in Glen Arbor before or after your hike to check out the great shops, grab a bite to eat, or just walk around town.

Glen Lake

Filed under: Leelanau, boats, glen lake, leelanau.com, map, michigan, outdoors, travel — Luke @ 10:39 am

According to the Leelanau Conservancy "Glen Lake, framed by a dramatic rise of Sleeping Bear to the west, and surrounded by high-forested moraines to the east and south, presents one of the most recognizable landscapes in Michigan. The waters of Glen Lake are so pure that with increasing depth, on a clear day the water colors shift from sandy hues of the shallows through aquamarine to some of the deepest blue known anywhere." A better description of Glen Lake cannot be found.

Local legend says that Glen Lake was recognized as "the most beautiful lake in the world" by National Geographic Magazine, (the magazine denies ever having published such a ranking), but anyone who has cast their eyes upon this body of water would agree with the legend. Glen Lake actually consists of two lakes: Big Glen and Little Glen, with a bridge that stretches over the narrow bit of water connecting the two. Little Glen Lake is below the Sleeping Bear Dunes, and Big Glen is less than a mile away from the town of Glen Arbor.

Cool things to do: canoe or kayak (rent one from Crystal River Outfitters), sail, paddle, or just hang out on a pontoon (rent them from On the Narrows Marina), waterski, wakeboard, wakeskate, or tube (rent the equipment and boat from Glen Craft Marina), or just relax in the water at the public access sites on the lake.

Check out the Glen Lake Association for in depth info about Glen Lake.

The Glen Lake Yacht Club is a great way to meet people and enjoy your favorite summer sports, from sailing to tennis.

Head into Glen Arbor for some great food and shopping.

Burdickville, Michigan

Filed under: Leelanau, glen lake, leelanau.com, map, michigan, travel — Luke @ 9:40 am

All that remains in the area of the once thriving town of Burdickville are two lone businesses. Laker Shakes and Trattoria Funistrada. Although both Laker Shakes and Funistrada are located in Burdickville, neither can claim that they are part of the history of the town. In the late 1850s William Burdick built a saw and grist mill. In 1876 John Helm built a general store. Not much more of the town is known other than the fact that one of the area's newspapers, the Burdickville Meteor in the 1870s was published in Burdickville.

Glen Arbor, Michigan

Filed under: Community, Leelanau, glen arbor, glen haven, glen lake, history, map, michigan, sleepingbeardunes, travel — Andrew McFarlane @ 8:18 am

Atop the Dunes by Andy McFarlaneGlen Arbor is located on a small strip of land between Glen Lake and Lake Michigan in the heart of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Glen Lake's natural beauty attracts visitors throughout the summer. Considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the entire state, local legend says that Glen Lake was recognized as "the most beautiful lake in the world" by National Geographic Magazine (though the magazine denies ever having published such a ranking).

Glen Arbor was first settled around 1848 when John LaRue moved from South Manitou Island in order to set up a trading post on the Sleeping Bear Bay. As other families moved into the area a wooding station was built to provide fuel for passing steamers. In 1856 a dock was built to aid in the loading of the steamers, which soon became known as the Central Dock. By 1868 the township of Glen Arbor had 200 people, three docks, two hotels, four stores, a blacksmith shop, and a copper shop. The Empire and Southeastern Railroad stopped in Empire just a few miles away, providing transportation to the area. It is said that before the 1900s there were numerous cranberry bogs along the banks of the Crystal River. The Crystal River runs from Little Fisher Lake to Lake Michigan. Signs of the old cranberry bogs can still be seen along the banks of the river.

Kayaks or canoes are available to rent from several businesses along the Crystal. If you are feeling really adventurous, either paddle around Glen Lake, or begin your expedition in Big Glen Lake, paddle through Big Fisher, then Little Fisher, then follow the Crystal River all the way to Lake Michigan. The famous Dune Climb is just minutes away from Glen Arbor, and there you can climb up the 150 foot dune.

If a less crowded hike is more to your liking then head on over to Glen Haven for the Sleeping Bear Point Trail. The Glen Arbor area has years and years of history and much can be found at the village of Glen Haven, which has been renovated to look like the town did in the 1920s. The historic Sleeping Bear Point Lifesaving Station, which was built in 1901, can be found just minutes from Glen Haven.

Musicals at Suttons Bay & Glen Lake schools this weekend

Filed under: Leelanau, glen lake, music, schools, suttons bay, theater, youth — Andrew McFarlane @ 11:17 am

Weekend plays: dueling pachyderms! The Leelanau Enterprise has a pair of articles about theater productions at Leelanau schools this weekend.

Suttons Bay students will stage the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The King and I on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. They say "The King and I is set in the 1860s around the king’s palace in Bangkok, Siam. Anna is a teacher hired by the king to educate the royal prince and princesses in the palace. "(read more and see a photo)

Meanwhile Glen Lake elementary and middle school students will put on Seussical Jr. – the musical based on Dr. Seuss' beloved stories, Horton Hears a Who and Horton Hatches an Egg at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday (more from the Enterprise article).

Sorry about the late notice. I have to point out to the schools that in the future they can add these, for free to our Leelanau Calendar! I'd also like to add that I had no idea the picture for this would end up as dueling pachyderms.

The Laker Chair Company

Filed under: Business, glen lake, homes, schools — Andrew McFarlane @ 11:11 am

Adirondack ChairsThe Leelanau Enterprise has a feature on an interesting project by the shop class at Glen Lake High School.

To reinforce the knowledge they are imparting to their students, teachers Judy Willey and Jeff Barrett came up with an idea: form a company and have the students apply for jobs within the company. But rather than make it a "paper" entity, they decided to make it a real company.

"We came up with the Laker Chair Company. Jeff and I are the CEOs, the kids like to joke about that," said Willey. The students are building Adirondack chairs made of cedar wood, and then market and sell the chairs. The class has produced four chairs, which they donated to the Glen Lake Gala.
