Preserving Sonny Swanson's Farm

The Grand Traverse Insider says that the Leelanau Conservancy has signed an option to purchase Sonny Swanson's farm and has until Jan. 31, 2011, to raise the $900,000 needed to complete the transaction.

The old farm stand along M-22 near Sugarloaf has stood there since it was built in 1931, and in spite of the changing times, visitors and locals alike knew they could depend on farmer Sonny Swanson to keep the pale yellow stand stocked with fresh strawberries, sweet corn, squash, and pumpkins in season.

They also appreciated, and honored his trust in them – his cash box, with its hand-lettered sign reading: “God knows everything. Thank you for being honest,” reminded everyone that they were worthy of trust, and most of the time, they were...

“This land is special to us and to the people in the area for a lot of reasons,” Price said. “What you see from M-22 is just a small part of what we’re preserving.”

Wetlands cover most of the property, which also has 2,000 feet of natural shoreline along Little Traverse Lake, a ridge overlooking the lake, and a half-mile of road frontage along the M-22 Scenic Heritage Route.

I am thankful for….

Filed under: Community,family,Food & Dining,holiday,Leelanau,nonprofit,preservation,schools — Leelanau.com @ 1:09 pm

We  are all lucky to live or maybe just have spent time in Leelanau.  We know this is a magical place, with many amazing places, people, and things to do.  On this eve of Thanksgiving, I wanted to share with you some of the things in Leelanau and my life, in which I am thankful.

I am thankful for all of the Leelanau county schools!  Last night, as I watched my Northport Pubilc School 6th grader proudly accept his first sports award, I realized how glad that I am that he attends a small community school. Our Leelanau kids are excelling in sports, achieving academically, and making a difference in our communities. If it takes a village to raise a child, then we should all be thankful for these wonderful teachers, coaches, and staff, that spend so much time with our children.

I am thankful that fast food in Leelanau means waiting fifteen minutes at the Cheese Shanty. Or gathering around the yellow caboose in Northport, known as the Bayside Grill. I am thankful for fast food like "Dinners to Go" from Silvertree Deli, and steaming hot soup from the Merc. I am thankful for the owners and employees of these establishments that not only provide delicious meals, but wonderful service that make us keep coming back for more.

I am thankful for the wonderful people in Leelanau, who truly care, and are making a difference in our communities. The Northport Promise Committee has provided many scholarship dollars to our children. The Leland Community Cultural Center and the Old Art Building provides a wonderful venue to help support not only local artists, but to build community involvement with their many classes and activities. Inland Seas Education Association gives a unique opportunity for all of us to learn more about water and the Great Lakes.

Of all the things that I am grateful for in Leelanau, one thing stands above them all. What else, but Lake Michigan! I am thankful for the hours that I have spent swimming, boating, fishing, picnicking, on the lake. The memories with friends and family are priceless. Whether your family has been here for centuries, or you have only visited Leelanau once, Lake Michigan is what keeps us connected to Leelanau.

Last, but certainly not least, on behalf of the Leelanau Communications staff, I want to say that we are thankful to YOU. Thank you for visiting leelanau.com! Thank you for reading our daily blogs! Thank you for supporting our local businesses! Thank you for being a part of our community!

Now we want to hear, what makes you thankful! Please use the comment area to tell us.

Happy Thanksgiving from Leelanau Communications!

Happy Birthday to you, Traverse Colantha Walker

State Hospital Memorial Marker For Traverse Colantha Walker (Traverse City, MI), photo by takomabibelot.

Post courtsey of Michigan in Pictures!

From World Champion Cow of the Insane at Roadside America:

Northern Michigan Asylum opened in 1885 and gradually became a sprawling complex on the western outskirts of Traverse City. It was so vast that it had orchards of cherries, peaches and apples, vineyards and vegetable gardens, field crops, and livestock from beef to chickens, horses to pigs. And it had its own herd of cows.

The most famous of these — the most famous inhabitant, period, of the entire Asylum — was Traverse Colantha Walker. She was a grand champion milk cow, producing 200,114 pounds of milk and 7,525 pounds of butterfat in her long life. When she died in 1932 the hospital staff and patients held a banquet in her honor. They buried her in a small, grassy knoll, under a marble tombstone, outside of the stately brick dairy barn that had been her home.

The inaugural Traverse Colantha Walker Dairy Festival will take place on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at the Grand Traverse Commons.

See this bigger right here and also check out takomabibelot’s slideshow. The marker reads:
