2014 Leland Wine & Food Festival

Filed under: calendar,fishtown,Food & Dining,fun,Leelanau,leland,summer,wine — Leelanau.com @ 1:05 pm

The annual Leland Wine & Food Festival takes place (as always) on the second Saturday in June. That's June 14, 2014.

Come enjoy a day in the Leland Harbor and Leland's historic Fishtown tasting wines from local wineries and tasting the specialties from local restaurants and vendors. There's also live music from Soul Patch in the park all day and of course plenty of beautiful views of Lake Michigan and the Manitou Islands.

Admission is $15 and includes an etched wine glass and two tokens for wine tasting. Additional tokens are available and age 10-21, or non-drinkers are $10, and under 10 is free. Tickets are available at gate, Two Fish Gallery and The Riverside Inn in Leland or online. Advance tickets get you in "the fast line" so you might want to purchase now.

Food vendors accept cash only - a list of this year's participating wineries and food vendors is below.

There's also a new "Artscape" art & wine event Friday night from 5-8 pm at the Old Art Building in Leland. Local artists will be displaying 30 amazing paintings for you to vote on to represent the 2015 Leland Wine & Food Festival on the 2014 poster. Guests of the party/exhibit will have the opportunity to cast their ballot until Saturday, June 8 at 4:00 pm. The painting with the most votes will be announced from the band stand at 6:00 pm, at the Leland Wine & Food Festival.

Admission is $20 per person and you can get a weekend ticket that includes both events for just $30.

A new spin for Pure Michigan!

via today's Michigan in Pictures...

Rick-Snyder-announces-Pure-Snow

APRIL 1, 2014 - LANSING, MI Governor Rick Snyder traveled to Ishpeming in the Upper Peninsula to announce to a crowd of media, dignitaries and frozen-to-death Michiganders that effective immediately, the “Pure Michigan” tourism campaign will be re-branded as “Pure Snow”.

“Who are we kidding?” Gov. Snyder explained. “Winter 2014 was like something out of the latest Thor movie (which coincidentally cost less to make than this year’s snow plowing bill). Pure Michigan has served the state well for years, but although it looks like we’re in the clear now - in another six months, it’s back to winter again!”

The state’s $8.4 million dollar re-branding effort will seek to market travel by snowmobilers, skiers and “people without a brain in their head.” The State rock will now be “ice”, the State capital will now be Pellston, the “Ice Box of the North”, the State motto will be “If you seek a pleasant peninsula, what the hell are you doing here?” and the State animal will now be “frozen in a snowdrift”.

Last night I learned that the 2014 Central Regional DN Iceboating Championship will be held this Saturday & Sunday (March 15-16, 2014) on West Grand Traverse Bay. The primary launch site will be the DNR launch at Hilltop Rd. and M-22, approximately 9 miles north of Traverse City and 5 miles south of Suttons Bay on the Leelanau Peninsula.

More details about the event at DNA America and learn more about the International DN ice boat (a Michigan original) at Michigan in Pictures!

This should be a great event for spectators and ice boating on Grand Traverse Bay is pretty rare!

Donald Trump unveils "Trump Leelanau" in Maple City

Filed under: Business,development,fun,Leelanau,maple city,michigan,news,webdesign — Andrew McFarlane @ 12:11 pm

April 1, 2011, Maple City, MI - Today financial magnate, reality TV star and Presidential aspirant Donald Trump unveiled "Trump Leelanau", a combined hotel, office park and high-end pet spa in Maple City. At 1723 feet, the soaring structure easily surpasses the Willis Tower in Chicago as the tallest building in the United States.

"Those who know me know that I like to dream big, and go big," The Donald explained. "Michigan has really been hurting and I wanted to make a statement that it's time for Michigan to go big or go home. I chose Maple City because everyone knows that you can't beat the jerky at Gabe's and also because I found out that Maple City residents spend an average of $67 per year more on pet recreation than the national average."

Long-time Maple City resident Lois Flaska expressed a common sentiment, telling us "Well like everyone else, it's taking some getting used to for me when I take Mr. Fluffles for a walk and all of the sudden bam! there's this giant building up there and I think I'm in New York or something.

It's really nice that Mr. Trump is offering a 50% discount to all Maple City residents on pet grooming - Mr. Fluffles really loves his new 'do!"
