Wreck of the Jennie and Annie washes up on Sleeping Bear Point
About a week ago now I came across this photo by Mark Lindsay. I asked former Park Ranger Bill Herd, and he told me what has since come out in the media. Sleeping Bear Dunes historians believe the schooner fragment, estimated to be about 40-feet long and peppered with twisted metals spikes, is part of the shipŐs bilge keelsons, which the Oxford Handbook of Maritime Archeology says were long timbers running most of the shipŐs length, strengthening the keel.   read more »

Liko Smith and the Future of Sugar Loaf Mountain

Filed under: cedar,golf,Leelanau,michigan,news,skiing,sugar loaf,winter — Andrew McFarlane @ 10:10 am

Here's a preface to the preface. This comes via our Absolute Michigan web site. You probably know some of the background info we offer but there is some interesting reading, especially if you follow the link to Liko's web site and (under Friends of Sugar Loaf) read the letter from Skip Telgard of the Bluebird.

I'm a Sugar LoaferToday we're bringing you a whole lot of information about a Michigan landmark that is very near and dear to my heart: Sugar Loaf Mountain in Leelanau County. I am indeed a Sugar Loafer. I grew up skiing there, worked as a lift operator and was taken for thousands of dollars in services rendered but never paid for by the last management company to run the resort and was one of the leaders of a movement to try and acquire the resort as a community ski area. That effort was halted when the current owner, Kate Wickstrom purchased Sugar Loaf.

Since then, the resort has lain dormant. Then, about a month ago, Liko Smith emerged on the scene as a potential savior for the resort. Close on his heels were a slew of stories and accusations that have made many question whether we're climbing back on the merry-go-round of disappointment that has become synonymous with the name of Sugar Loaf. Today I'd like to present for your consideration a wide range of information including an interview with Mr. Smith on Absolute Michigan Radio co-sponsored by Traverse Legal, so that you can come to your own conclusions.

Jacob Wheeler of the Glen Arbor Sun has a feature looking at Liko Smith, his business connections and what it would take to resurrect the long-beleaguered ski resort:

Michael Berry, President of the Denver-based National Ski Areas Association, thought that reopening Sugar Loaf was entirely possible. Berry guessed that one could acquire new ski lifts and snowmaking equipment at Sugar Loaf for $4-5 million, and satisfy insurance company standards within two or three months (there are only two or three players in the industry).

...But one ski expert at a Midwestern resort, who asked to remain anonymous, doubted Berry’s optimistic prognosis for Sugar Loaf, and estimated that it would cost at least $10-15 million to buy equipment, make snow, and open the hills. He added that Smith would have to order lifts by next month, or there would be no way to get them in time for next winter.

...“Sugar Loaf would have to pull skiers away from (nearby resorts) Crystal Mountain, Nubs Nob and Boyne. … The market isn’t getting any bigger. Sugar Loaf would have to draw from the existing players.”

If you'd like to meet Liko and hear more about his plans, there's a $100 Quad Fund mixer at Red Ginger in Traverse City. More about that and more from Liko at likosmith.com. (hint: click the "Friends of Sugar Loaf" for some interesting reading and insight into Liko Smith and the feeling in the community).

By far the most active discussion has taken place in the Friends of Sugar Loaf group on Facebook.

A Northport – Charleviox Passenger Ferry?

Filed under: Business,Community,Leelanau,Lodging & Travel,map,northport,seasons — Leelanau.com @ 11:42 am

Chris Blessing, a junior at Northport Public School, has been researching the possibility of a passenger ferry between Northport and Charlevoix. He argues the benefits of a ferry on his website, that he started for a school project. Chris says:

A passenger ferry service running between the towns of Northport and Charlevoix is the perfect business opportunity to bring income back into the region. Northport is a great place to visit, and thousands of people know that already. However, there is nothing really happening to help make any difference. Sure there are the art galleries, restaurants, and Grand Traverse Lighthouse, but that is too one sided. "Travel is strongly linked to employment and transit expenditures, and is probably most strongly linked to employment growth, increased household incomes, and the growth of two-worker families" (Kamen). Nothing could be better for Northport. More income equals more purchasing which equals more growth. Factors like these form a stable economy. It is capitalism at its finest.

Be sure to check out his site, where he has many examples, flow charts, and considerations for the idea of the passenger ferry. What do you think? Would it work? Good idea? Bad idea? Please feel free to leave comments here, but Chris also has room for opinions on his site.

Grand Traverse Earth Day Parade

"Pedal Power" is the theme of the 2010 Grand Traverse Earth Day Parade, celebrating the 40th Anniversery of Earth Day.  Deck out your bike, trike, wagon, scooter!  What kind of "petal/pedal" can you be?  Parade Rules are to keep it safe and simple, no pets, no words, and no motors.  Meet at Central Grade School at Noon, Saturday, April 24.

Also, Little Artshram works with Rhythmic Adventures and a slew of friends and volunteers to organize and build the annual Grand Traverse Earth Day Parade with months of preparation in our Earth Day Community Art Studio, beginning in January and up until the annual spring celebration in April. This year you can bring your music-making instrument and join the Earth Day Parade Band(s) at the corner of Pine and 7th streets at noon, on Saturday April 24th (bad weather date, May 1st).  For music-making details, contact Dede Alderman: dedealderman@charter.net

A community picnic at Hannah Park will be held directly after the parade. Pack it in - pack it out..this is a zero trash event.

The Northport Sportsmen's Club has back to back events

Filed under: calendar,Community,family,fishing,food,Food & Dining,Leelanau,northport,spring,youth — Leelanau.com @ 10:53 am

fishingderbyThis Saturday, April 24, the opening day of trout season, the Northport Sportsmen Club sponsors a fishing derby at the Old Mill Pond in Northport. Fishing is reserved for children, with parents helping them. The club will have two tents overlooking the millpond – one with hot dogs and the other with prizes such as fishing poles and games. Trophies will be awarded to kids catching the largest trout.

Next Saturday, May 1, is their annual Smelt Supper at the Northport Fire Hall. The Northport Sportsmen's Club has been hosting this event for years and they know how to cook smelt and all the trimmings. The dinner and bucket raffle help raise funds for a variety of community projects sponsored by the club. Dinner starts at 4 p.m. and runs until 8 p.m. Adults are $10, children 5-12 are $5 and preschoolers are free.
