Wreck of the Jennie and Annie washes up on Sleeping Bear Point
About a week ago now I came across this photo by Mark Lindsay. I asked former Park Ranger Bill Herd, and he told me what has since come out in the media. Sleeping Bear Dunes historians believe the schooner fragment, estimated to be about 40-feet long and peppered with twisted metals spikes, is part of the ships bilge keelsons, which the Oxford Handbook of Maritime Archeology says were long timbers running most of the ships length, strengthening the keel.   read more »

Bicycle Tours Offered at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Superintendent Dusty Shultz welcomes Ryan Locke to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore as a Transportation Interpreter, a position sponsored by the National Park Foundation (NPF). Locke, from Spring Lake, Michigan, will spend the summer creating and offering bicycle tours to the public and promoting the use of alternative transportation in the National Lakeshore.

Locke is one of 10 students working in nine national parks across the country providing visitors with invaluable information about the many alternative modes of transportation available to them. “While we will still be offering daily ranger-led walks, historical demonstrations, and evening campground programs, thanks to the National Park Foundation, park visitors and locals may choose another way to see and learn about the National Lakeshore with a knowledgeable bike guide,” said Superintendent Shultz. “Ryan worked with us as an intern last summer pioneering this program, so he is quite familiar with the park and is very excited about continuing these bike programs.” Locke will pedal on four different routes, Tuesdays through Fridays, beginning on June 23. The easy to moderate rides will cover between three and ten miles, lasting approximately two hours. Topics are:

  • Discovering Cultural Landscapes: North of Glen Arbor, through the Port Oneida Rural Historic District. Wednesdays at 5:00 p.m., Fridays at 11:00 a.m.
  • Backroads, Farms, and Forests: South of Empire, through an agricultural landscape, ghost town, and former logging area. Thursdays at 11:00 a.m., Fridays at 5:00 p.m.
  • Recreation and Tourism: Past, Present, and Future! North of Empire, on paved roads near the Dune Climb, along Glen Lake, and visiting Glen Haven. Wednesdays at 11:00 a.m., Thursdays at 5:00 p.m.
  • Bicycle Safety and Beach Ride at Platte River Campground: Starting in the campground and riding down Peterson Road to the beach and back, all ages welcome. Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m.

No reservations are needed, and participants need only purchase the park entrance pass to join in the fun ($10.00/vehicle valid for seven days or $20.00/vehicle for an entire year). When planning to attend a program, be prepared for all kinds of weather, dress appropriately and wear a bike helmet. It is recommended that participants be 10 years of age or older.

Leelanau Almanac for the Week of July 16 – 22, 2009

Filed under: almanac,backgrounds,Leelanau,leelanau.com,news,weather — Leelanau.com @ 9:13 am

Stories from the week started with the Sugar Loaf Vision, where Cleveland and Centerville Townships, the Leelanau County Planning Department, and many concerned citizens met to discuss the future of the Sugar Loaf Property. Another concern that was focused on, was the state funding cuts to Early Childhood Education and how it impacts the Leelanau Children's Center, the article also highlighted the LCC's annual Pig Roast. A couple of great events featured were the Art Leelanau Benefit & Exhibition and the 5th Annual Traverse City Film Festival. On Friday, we got a little playful with this cute Otter photo by SRJacobs.

2009 Traverse City Film Festival

The 2009 Traverse City Film Festival, now in it's 5th year, strives to give movie goes," Just Great Movies," while helping to save one of America's few indigenous art forms - the cinema.  The festival, which takes place July 28 - Aug 2,  offers over 100 screenings, including free outdoor movies, panel discussions with film industry professionals, TCFF Film School, and  a few parties.  The festival has grown to become one of the largest film festivals in the Midwest and one of the most respected in the country.

Film festival organizers give special emphasis to foreign films, American independents, documentaries, and films which have been overlooked but deserve the attention of a public starved to see a good movie.  A couple movies worth noting include: Julie and Julia, about the early days of renowned chef Julia Child's career, and Julie Powell's attempt to cook and blog her way through all 524 recipes in Child's "Mastering the Art of French Cooking,"  and  Waterlife, which presents a tour of the beauty and ecological distress of each of the five lakes.  Please visit the TCFF website for a complete movie guide.

For in-depth coverage of the Traverse City Film Festival, please follow festival sponsor, Absolute Michigan, as they offer a a special On Location: 2009 Traverse City Film Festival Blog.   The Absolute Michigan crew will be present during many of the movies, parties, panel discussions, and paying very close attention to the Michigan Film Office Advisory Council Meeting which takes place on Friday, July 31st.

Still hungry for more TCFF, visit Interlochen Public Radio for more festival updates, along with the TCFF blog, which is updated constantly.  Since you never know who you might see in the crowd, be sure to check out festival photos from the TCFF Flickr and the Traverse City Film Festival photo group.  Or reminisce with highlights from the 2008 TCFF.

Leelanau Children's Center – Early Childhood funding cuts

Filed under: calendar,Community,family,fun,Leelanau,leland,news,northport,schools,video,youth — Leelanau.com @ 11:56 am

The state of Michigan is looking to cut funding for early childhood programs, such as 0-3 Secondary, Great Parents, Great Start, GSRP Readiness Program, as well as the Early Childhood Investment Corporation.  These cuts could adversely affect daycare assistance for working parents.  Without this assistance, many parents will be unable to afford child care, giving them a hard decision whether to stay home to care for their children or work to support them.

In addition, the importance of education at an early age is crucial to the development of a child.  Maggie, from The Leelanau Children's Center, was recently interviewed by TV &&4.  Maggie states the importance of this education, saying that when a good job is done early with children, there is much less special education, more high school graduations,  more children getting a college education,  and more.  Check out Maggie's interview here.

She also mentions that early childhood education benefits could outweigh the costs.  A recent study by the RAND Corporation states, "First, there is clear potential for early childhood programs to produce benefits that offset their costs, but not every early childhood program does so. Seven of the nine analyses found benefit-cost ratios greater than 1, implying that the benefits outweighed the costs, with a range between $2 and $17 in benefits for every dollar invested."

With these cuts looming on the horizon, it makes fundraisers, such as the Leelanau Children Center's annual Pig Roast, very important.  The Pig Roast will be held this year at Marina Park in Northport on Saturday, August 1.

Dinner menu ($15): Roast pork, old-fashioned baked beans, cole slaw, sliced TLC tomatoes, pasta-vegetable salad, assorted pies and lemonade. Children's menu ($5) children under 5 eat free: Hot dog, potato chips, applesauce, cookie, and lemonade. A full afternoon of family activities including: children's games & prizes, nature and conservation activities, learning about community resources, music from the Northport Community Band, raffle, and much, much more! Visit Leelanau Children's Center or call 231.256-7841 for tickets.
