Yesterday Leland School hosted the regional mock election that features students speaking on behalf of the candidates followed by the candidates themselves or their reps. TV 7&4 has a video report from the election:
Candidates running for state and national positions came from Lansing and Washington to Leland... trying to win student votes. And one by one those running for office gave their speeches.
"As a U.S. Senator I want to make sure we preserve freedoms and the liberties we've enjoyed so our children can enjoy them as well," said Candidate for U.S. Senator, Republican Jack Hoogendyk.
"These kids are our future and we want to make sure we're doing everything we can to make sure their future is in Michigan," said Candidate for State Representative, Democrat Dan Scripps.
And after a meet and greet with the candidates students took their votes to the ballot box. But the results will not only decide who they want to win, but their grade. The mock election has been months in the making. It's a project that's a big part of their government class assignment.
Getting the nod from the students were Republican Jack Hoogendyk for U.S. Senate and Democrats Dan Scripps for State Representative, Andrew Concannon for Congress and Barack Obama for President. More about this very cool process at the Michigan Mock Election web site and the National Parent Student Mock Election.
Ghost at the Light from MyNorth.com tells the tale of Captain Peter Nelson, Danish sailor and keeper of the Grand Traverse Lighthouse, who some believe roams the light 113 years after his death. It's written by Nelson's great-great-great-granddaughter Emily Betz Tyra and begins:
Stef Staley, the no-nonsense executive director of the lighthouse museum, is waiting inside. In the fall when it’s quiet Staley hears the most from the ghost that haunts the light. When she’s here alone and everything is all buttoned up she hears someone with hard-soled shoes crossing the hardwood floors. “In the bathroom, I hear voices, in the hall going toward the tower. Then someone walking up the tower. I hear it, I walk out, and there’s not a soul anywhere,” she says. She stares into my eyes.
She’s not the only one who senses the ghost. She tells of a docent volunteer here in April who, anxious and almost embarrassed, reported to her that the night before he felt someone brush past him and then felt a warm flow of air three times in a row. Another volunteer at the admissions desk for the museum sensed a presence, then glanced over to the threshold of the original exterior door and saw a man with his face down, kicking off his boots.
News from the week was basically events except for Suttons Bay's soccer run. The Norsemen had a great regional opener, crushing Big Rapids, but they fell 1-0 to #3 Muskegon Catholic Central. Congratulations on a great season!

There's just two days left to fill out your Grand Vision Scorecard and weigh in on how you think our region should grow. Leelanau.com developed the web site for The Grand Vision, and we feel it's critically important that everyone take a little time to think about how our region will accommodate the tens of thousands of new residents that will move to northwest Michigan in the coming years. The results of the Grand Vision will help guide how money is spent on transportation in our region for years to come.
Please take the time (just 10 or 15 minutes) to fill out your scorecard and please also pass it along to your friends & family!

We had a chance to chat with Phyllis Kilcherman about her husband's pop bottle collection that is now at 10,000! Each bottle is unique.
The Kilcherman's own Christmas Cove Farm in Northport, MI at 11573 N. Kilcherman Rd. They've been there since 1955! In addition to seeing their pop bottle collection, they also offer dozens of varieties of antique apples and cider for sale...and have fun chatting with them which is the best part of all!
From downtown Northport head north out of town on 201, go left at the first split...less than a mile from town.
Have fun!
If you go there, I expect you will. Years ago, I had a chance to talk with John & Phyllis about their antique apples. More about the Christmas Cove Farm at their web site.
